I don't know about signs but I do know about working from home.
I enquired with the council when I became self employed. They said working from home with the odd delivery of stuff is fine. All the work I do at home is desk based, so I don't cause any nusiance to anyone.
My mortgage lender is fine with clerical use only and I've noticed clerical business use is either included or it can be added onto a home insurance policy for little cost. Here I go again on my own....0

because both have an interest in what your home is being used for, and your insurers may refuse any claims you make if you haven't told them. You really don't come across as very bright at all.
No he has no sign, any probably no appetite for success either!
My home is being used as a home... I have no room set aside for a business, nothing for business use needs insuring, no customers will be setting foot inside my home. Do people who run catalogues need to tell their mortgage companies?
And as for saying I'm not very bright... I'm not here to be insulted. I was here for info, which everyone else has gladly given me. You dont know me, or anything about me. I consider myself to be very bright, and successful and don't really take kindly to being insulted by an internet warrior on a forum. I await your apology, thanks.0

To everyone who has offered info or constructive criticism, Thanks very much.

You need one of these parked outside your house then they can't touch you. So itt really is 8 feet wide - hmm, well I can see that would raise a few eyebrows. Why dont you just distribute leaflets to the parents when they come to pick up their children from the school?
Your builder guy may work from home but having an office at home is different to advertising a business like this.0

            Banner is cheaper than leaflets!
Yeah its 8ft... basically fills the gap between bottom of upstairs window and top of downstairs window across the bay.
What would be the situation if I got a sign writer to write the letters on my already white house?
So not physical sign, just get my house painted?!0

Well banner may be cheaper but not if you get neighbours backs up and council round your neck. (I hope you are kiddin about the sign writing )
Id have thought a few leaflets and some ads in the local paper would be worthwhile for you.
Even some appearances at local fetes and so on.0

According to the previous link, it would still not be allowed without planning permission.0
