Hi,

We have started a very small business from home, basically party kind of stuff.... and have every intention of being above board and declaring profits etc - if we ever make any!

We've done all the usual promo things, business cards, flyers, website...

Anyhow, I have put a banner outside my home, measuring around 8' x 2' screwed to my front wall below the bedroom window - its plain white with black writing, can hardly be seen unless you are square on to it.

It can't sort of bring the area down as there is a pub either side of the road, within 200 metres and they both diaply colourful banners etc.

I put it up then spoke to all the neighbours, to make sure they had no issues, and they were all fine with it... apart from the resident neighbour from hell, who would disagreee with anything I done!

They had a right go at be calling me names and swearing in front of my young son, and basically said 'lets see how long it lasts'

I have cctv on my home, and checked it today after I've been out for the day and seen them taking photos of my home... they are slightly strange, jealous people, and this wont be the first thing they've tried to argue with us about... we generally just ignore them.

My question is, would the council etc be involved or interested in my sign?? What could they do? What should I do?

The council may well object to the sign. More important however is the fact that you are running a business from home.

If you are a tenant, then it will probably be forbidden by the lease. If you are the owner, then there is probably a covenant in your deeds that prevents you from doing that.

Check those out. Consider house insurance too, as some insurance companies really don't like it.

I'm the owner, its freehold property, nothing I can see in the deeds...

And its not exactly running a business from home as all the work is done at events and venues....

So its really just sort of, getting the customers from home.

Surely other people work from home... you see posters advertising it everywhere.

Just to add, I have my own limited company, for a seperate thing... and wouldn't have an issue throwing this into the melting pot if need be....

the fact that the sign is 8x2 is probably going to cause trouble with the council.
a smaller sign and they would prob not bother you.

councils are very funny about advertising signs and have strict rules about commercial premise signage.

I dont understand why it would be an issue....

The outside of the house is white. The sign is white with small black letters...!?!

You cant see it from either of next doors homes, there are no houses opposite... if you look out of next doors window you look straight at a pub with Sky Sports signs and happy hours signs all over the wall!

I would have to agree with some of the other posts. I think the size is the issue 8x2 could be seen as rather large. There are many things that this could raise. You are advertising the fact that your home is becoming a commercial premise ? This will have a knock on effect re house insurance and Business rates. I would take it down and be a little more low key.

I admire people who are motivated enought to try and get ahead. I wouldn't worry too much about the working from home comercial premises bit. You are not conducting any business and your house is just the registered address of the company. Builders do this all the time.

The sign however will be an issue and I think that planning is required for it. As strange as it sounds though, if you have a van or truck parked outside your house you can plaster as many adverts in whatever bright colours that you want and it requires no approval.

So number 1 option, if you have a van put it on there or my second option would be offer the pub a bit to advertise on their frontage?

Best of luck to you mate
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!
  • Is there confusion over the size of the sign here? Is 8x2 feet or 8x2 inches??

So do I, as long as it is done correctly, hanging an 8 x 2 sign on the front of a private house is not the way to do things properly.
