Thanks to nopot2pin, kelou and Allegra for the mushy pea advice. Will have a go at that tomorrow. Its a northern thing (i'm from Yorkshire), I just love mushy peas. My OH won't even try them, not heard of them until he moved up north!

    Off to work now...

Congratulations on the job Shanks :)

We're all set for cottage pie tonight. I got a bit ahead of the game by cooking the mince the other day when it was chilli night, and sticking in the freezer, so a nice easy evening's cooking tonight, and this is one of our normal meals, so I know what I'm doing!!

I had to throw one of my carrots away early on. It was a bit deformed, had a large chunk missing and looked kind of slimy inside. I think it was a wrong 'un from the start though, as the rest still seem to be fine.

    Mushy peas bleurgh.

Weezl-thank you very much for your kind offer but its fine. They were obviously just a bad batch as I have had bags of carrots last much longer than this.

I worry about you as although the planner is your idea Weezl, it is not your responsibility to make sure everything goes perfectly. You always seem very worried and quick to accept blame if things dont work or somebody doesnt like recipes and I feel very concerned that you are putting yourself under too much stress in this respect. If something goes worng, like my bread for example, I dont think, ''oh that silly weezl is making me do this'', I think hmmm....what would Shirley do in this postion/can she make more/can she stretch to buying a reduced loaf?

We know this is the first month and there will be some problems but I dont think ANYONE doing this would think it was your fault or put the blame on you.

So basically I am saying, please dont worry so much about us (but it is very nice that you do)

weezl I agree with arty. I in no way blame you for the things that aren't working or that my family don't like.
This is the 'giving it a whirl' thread which means that its going to be trial and error and some things are going to work better for some families than others.

Please don't carry the weight of it all on your shoulders.

On a funnier note...DH has just been hobbling about on his bad foot with the butter dish so DD1 couldn't eat 'his' butter...she's not willing to spend her money on buying her own ...:)

All my family and friends in real life are amazed by the testers and contributors to this. They know me and so are not so surprised by my mad adventures, but that people who've only met on the internet would be willing to do this experiment is extraordinary.

I very much hope that doing this gives to you all as much as you are giving to it IYSWIM?

I keep my fresh vegetables in a wicker basket behind a curtain near the draughty back door. It seems to work quite well. Regarding carrots, Isometimes buy them by the sack and they don't go off. Sometimes I have had things from Mr Al that have gone off quickly.

weezl, please don't feel to blame if food goes off. It is the fault of ASDA or a storage problem. As I have bottles of lemon juice and have 8-10 visitors tomorrow I will make my lemon cordial with my remaining two lemons and some juice from the bottle.

BTW DH loved the oranges so much he ate two yesterday!!

We are having risi e bisi tonight.

Brilliant idea about freezing the lemons nopot2pin Thanks!

What Artybear said! Weezl don't stress! Maybe the shopping list could be broken down into items to be bulk bought for the month and items that may need to be bought weekly/fortnightly (eg milk, carrots, fruit etc) if peple don't have loads of storage/freezer space?

I also wonder if the eggs will keep long enough to make all the cake/omlettes/tart etc too as most of the eggs I have bought are dated for 2-3 weeks rather than a month? Not everyone will have freezer room to do an extra bulk carrot cake & delia onion tart and I don't think the omlette can be frozen at all. The eating order may need to be swapped around a bit depending on when your eggs are ok until!

This is the tester month and hence is when the odd hicups are discovered and info that may need to be added/expanded on to the final version of the planner (eg carrot & lemon storage)!

Personally I freeze things like multipacks of lemons (cut in half) - it makes it less messy to zest them too! :D There is only me so getting though a multipack takes me a while and buying them singly is too expensive! I often freeze orange wedges too - they make for a nice fruity orange ice cube. Yummy!
