Weezl and friends Phase 2 -giving it a whirl for Shirl! Testing meal plan for a month

hi shanks, not quite sure how to say this, but erm... which list did you buy:o? Is it not this one?0
-
:rotfl:
I hope I've phrased my question clearly, if you're a tester and you've bought lots/everything on the list please pop on and answer my question, and then I'll be able to stop fretting
Thanks loads
Potatoes - I tend to buy big sacks whenever I can and they tend to last us a month - as long as they are stored in porous material (not plastic) and in the dark, they ar fine. Might start sprouting a bit towards the end of the month, no big deal - just cut out the sprouty bit. No good for salad, but fine for wedges and the like.
Onions - also keep for ages if stored as above, but can go a bit sprouty this time of year (everything wants to grow in spring !), so if anyone is worried, chop and freeze.
Carrots - keep a couple of weeks in the fridge no problem. If you've bought a full month's supply, it might be an idea to cook up things like chili and cottage pie for freezer - can also be chopped, blanched and frozen to serve alongside meals. Carrot cake should also freeze okay, I would think.
Butternut squash - squash family is a good keeper, but once cut must be refrigerated.
In a nutshell, I'm fine, Weezl. Fingers crossed all the other testers can say the same0 -
weezl I've got my potatoes and onions in old log sacks in the garage.
My carrots are in the fridge, still in the plastic. I was just thinking today that I probably need to keep a close eye on them and if they start looking suspicious, I'll chop and freeze them.
I guess the only other thing to do is not buy a months worth?0 -
Oh, another confession.....seeing as my family haven't gone for the porridge or dried pea meals particularly, I actually took my 6 boxes of readyoats and my 8 boxes of peas back to Asda...
I was wondering then, if buying a full month's food when the meals are untried on the family, might not be such a good idea for Shirley?0 -
I agree with Allegra i chop and freeze onions all the time the only 2 things i would mention is if you are using a plastic container it will smell of onions and your freezer will smell of onions. I use food bags for this. Carrots can be blanched and frozen and pots will be fine. So again with Allegra no problems here so sleep well at night my dear the only thing that should keep you awake is your new baby and i am sure he is well trained not to do that to mummy:rotfl:0

oh I didn't realise all the things with the ready oats in weren't going down well frankiewas it the porridge and the scones etc?
I think that sounds like a wise idea for your family, cos you've got extra milk from the milkman.
My worry for shirl would be that unless she finds quite a bit of money from elsewhere to supplement the calcium then she can't junk the ready oats...
I'm guessing that like yesterday this is 'don't change the planner though!' kinda feedback:)

weezl We like the sweet scones, not big fans of the savoury..its no big deal.
I 'm eating the porridge but not often enough to need 6 boxes hanging around.
I thought I'd just buy a new box as I needed it.
And yes, this is for information only, not a 'change the plan'
My bread seems to have turned out ok. DH gave me a helping hand. I may get the hang of it by the end of the month.
DD3 was saying how filling she found it.
It does make a funny looking little sandwich, though...:)0 -

:rotfl:Oh Sian, you ought to see me in action, you really do. I am a kitchen menace, but I don't give up - which is the only secret of my success, such as it is !
And I am sooo stuffed tonight. For some reason, I seem to have temporarily lost sight tonight of the fact that I was only making risi e bisi for one, not for two. So, of course, I end up with a double portion. Okay, no problem there, the second portion will make a nice lunch tomorrow.... Except it won't, cos it's goneAnd very nice it was, too.
Moving swiftly on - I've done a bit more batch cooking today. Having made the effort to drag the food processor from the cupboard again (to whizz up tomatoes for pizza sauce) I reckoned it made sense to do all the tomato-whizzing at once, so also made and froze the amatriciana sauce and bean curry. Bread is disappearing fast again though, so I'll try and bake some more tomorrow.0 -

And very nice it was, too.
I eat more when my DH goes awayI think it's a comforty thing

Um.......... I was going to bring up the fresh veg problem. I had to throw away three quarters of a bag of carrots yesterday but Im not sure what more I could have done? They were in a cool dark cupboard and I really dont have room to freeze them.
Maybe Shirl can buy weekly if she has limited space?? Onions and potatoes are fine though.
Hi guys:hello:
Im back from my mega shift...I am so tired I cant see straight and as I have no TV I cant see the live debate:(. Someone right outside my work tried to stab some customers and they kicked in all of our glass doors:(. I was a little bit worried when I was waiting for mr arty to pick me up:(..so got left over chilli and pinot to make everything better.:)In art as in love, instinct is enough
