Can I ask why it will be harder for vegans due to lack of soya milk etc? when soya milk is about 63p a litre and cows milk is around 86 a litre, are you not using normal cows milk in the planner 1? and would you need to use more expensive things like tofu? when you can be getting protein from oats, bread, brocolli, chickpeas, lentils, peanuts and potatoes to name a few. I appreciate you wouldnt be able to get the fresh fruit and variety of vegetables in meals that vegans would expect to see, but surely the bob and shirley planner one, looks much the same to someone that eats meat, more vege meals than they are used to, and a lot less meat in dishes. The planner is to help people that need to live off of a low budget per day, there are people that do only have that amount of money to spend on food, so a vegan will also have to be realistic about what they can afford to keep in their diet and make sacrifices. I believe that they will still be able to live healthily. If fresh fruit and vegetables are needed, then surely that is down to the individual and their own circumstances whether they need or can indeed afford to add them to the plan.
You would definately be helping someone if a planner 3 could be developed!

That is very impressive-but I am wondering why you were making pasta at one in the morning?:D

Thanks Arty. It took longer to make than I thought it would and a friend rang for an emotional chat at 11 which slowed things somewhat.

Sian, PLEASE can we have a photo of the pasta hanging on the clothes airer?

I did take one but I would need to get them onto the computer and somewhere I can share them. I am sure it's possible. Might have to give you my facebook account! It looked so funny drying there!

Sian, well done you :) I'd think that the clothes airer would do the job just fine.

Thanks! I like it when someone like you says something like that, makes me think I am actually a proper grown up doing something not so ridiculous!

Pasta was a little time consuming but certainly not difficult, will report on the results when we have eaten some later! :)

Interesting about the curry, are baked beans high in calories then? Wouldn't have thought that at all, my money was on the carbonara.

Have a great day all x

Will think more about the cheese...:)

DH and I found we could make a cheese spread which made lunch be 14p, so it could fit in planner 2.... especially if cuppas were reduced/omitted...

To try to save us money spent on groceries I tried making cottage cheese last year using a frugal living recipe. It cost me more in milk than a tub of cottage cheese would have cost.

I then had the brilliant idea of getting a goat and making my own cheese. Mr pooh said NO! I usually ignore his no's but this time I listened as it was probably going too far in trying not to spend.

Frozen can actually be better than shop-bought fresh, Arty, as "fresh", by the time it's reached you, could have deteriorated to a great extent, whilst frozen, if frozen straight after picking, can have its vitamins and minerals far more intact at the time you eat it.

I usually buy frozen for puddings in the winter as it is much fresher than 'fresh' fruit. We also freeze a lot from the garden, red and blachcurrants, gooseberries and blue berriesand tons of rhubarb as it prererves the vitamins.

As for the em fresh fruit requirement, That was me Weezl, as that is a big concern for me.

I actually STILL believe fresh fruit is better nutritionally rather than frozen/canned.
I know children i only know what fresh fruit looks like only because they have it at school and that's in 2010. Shocking or what?

Yes, I understand this one. I was a food tech teacher and even at secondary age some young people didn't know lots of fruits as they had never seen them!! They knew apples, bananas and oranges!

So the only real thing i would lose is pate, nut butter for pack lunch as unfortunately my children would be picked on at school for eating that kind of food. But as my children eats loads they would probably eat the pate etc as a snack before dinner.

My kids were bullied at school for not having chocolate biscuits in wrappers, for goodness sake!! I can imagine what could happen with green nut butter sandwiches.

I am lucky that mine are older now and have sensible heads on their shoulders, most of the time.

Can anyone explain why I bought two bottles of lemon juice in my ASDA order? I have no idea what they were to be used for.

I know I can make lemonade or cordial with them:)

hiya,:D not sure if I've understood your question right frugalmum, but the reason why planner 3 can't afford soya milk is because it was/is built to accomodate the non-negotiable of people wanting one piece of fresh fruit per person daily. Because that's so expensive, we can only afford it to be vegan, but not to include things like soya milk, does that make sense? The meat one has cash for a little milk, but only because the amount of meat in planner one is 1/3rd of the price of that piece of fresh fruit daily.

    HTH :)

did they maybe sub them for the bags of lemons that were on the list?

edit: it's quite annoying of asda if they did cos that would really scupper someone who wanted to make marmalade!

Perhaps you ordered lemons and they got sent as a substitute?

I heard a wonderful story once in the early days of home-delivery shopping, when someone ordered a lemon meringue pie mix, and got a lemon-scented toilet cleaner as a substitute. It's probably an urban myth but very funny anyway.

Just finished making the vegan risi e bisi for dinner tonight (I'm working, so it has to be made in advance:))

I made as per the instruction... but I got 6 portions out of it :D
I am going to drop some off to my parents to try, and 3 portions are going in the freezer.
I do hope I have portioned it up right.... It just seemed a massive amount to be split into 4.
I will know later, when I have eaten it .... I will let you know.

    Off to work now

hi potty, perhaps you guys need fewer calories, but as an evening meal it's just 645 cals in total, so I guess it depends what else you've eaten today, otherwise I'd say dividing it into 6, which is just 430 cals wouldn't be quite sustaining enough, but perhaps you have some scones or bread or carrot cake to fill up on :)

I'll stop being old mother hen ish now :)

weezl - no I'd never heard of marrowfats until I came to the UK! "Mushy peas" as such are only sold in little British expat sections. Also, forgot to reply earlier but my mom had a dehydrator so made all sorts of yummy things like beef jerky and dried apple rings :).

baked bean curry doesn't surprise...aren't SP beans supposed to be the worst for salt/sugar? I don't really know much as baked beans are totally different in the US (I find British ones gross :o).
