susan avocet's linkie says that 95% of vit c is retained when you cook a citrus fruit, so that's swaying me in favour of cooking, but keeping pith and zest. Would you agree?
Sounds reasonable to me. I would expect that since you followed the "five a day" thing, the only problem vitamins would be those known to be difficult on a vegetarian diet as the five a day recommendation would presumably take into account the fact that people typically cook a lot of their food. Unless the calculations show that something is lacking but wouldn't be if cooking methods were changed, I don't see any reason to change them.

arty- vitamin D values for all the things on shirl's list? using USDA database? If you feel while you've called up each food stuff you may as well do a couple of nutrients, then do say and I'll give you a couple more :) Otherwise, just the vit D would be helpful :D

how does My arty feel it's best to handle his mum's feelings about the move?

Is she the type where if her concerns are fully heard then that might help? ie could you spend some time saying 'yes, I agree with you that london is more expensive...' Or whatever the concerns are. :)

Right, Ive done the following values
    • Thiamin/B1
    • Riboflavin/B2
    • Niacin/B3
    • Pantothenic acid/B5
    • Vitamin B-6
    • Vitamin B-12
For the first four sections on the shopping list. All using raw values-Im sorry, this raw vs cooked is too complicated for baby brain.

DS is on his way home so need to start lunch for him-will get done with the last two sections a bit later this afternoon if thats okay?
Okie dokie. That's 254.8mcg folate for 14 whole cooked lemons.

I'd say keep lemons cooked as the most they're losing is 30% for folates. Everything else is better retained.
thank you both very very very much :A:beer:

ermmm... no-one commented on the use of tapwater in the 3rd planner?

    Future directions-wise:

    JuliMK has reminded us that:

    1) roll out of nutrition boxes on each recipe is the next essential, (after kitty) containing cals. fat, salt, iron and calcium. (weezl work estimate- 45 hrs)

I asked if this could be contained in the recipe table, I don't remember reading people's reasons why that wasn't their preferred option? (weezl work estimate 10 hrs)

    2) possible hardcore month which can either be used in full or as a way for kitty/shirley to continue rotating their months. (weezl work estimate 120 hrs)
Fibre is another one that is shown on food labels/traffic light labels on the front of various foods so people may look for that being there too. (I imagine we'll have loads in the planners so it should be fine) Are you going to show % of daily RDAs? (This may help remind a slightly scared of eating fats shirley that we need a certain amount per day and this is HEALTHY for examle)!

In my opinion you can include in the recipe table (although it may be to much more info to try and fit in there and hence look a bit too cluttered maybe?). But... I think it is very important to have the info with the recipes for when shirley/kitty are trying to fish and put together their own thing. It will help a limited access to the internet shirley who has printed out her recipes too.

Personally if I was trying to put together a personal planner from CFR recipes (learning to fish) I'd print out recipes then try to bolt together days with the evening meal as a starting point eg an evening meal that has good amounts of everything except calcium means I'd have porridge that day for example. I kinda struggle to get loads of complicated variables out of something online without having to write them all down so if they were already on the recipes then that'd save me time and leave me feeling planning wasn't quite so complicated...

no, that's fine taka, I just wanted to be sure because it's a difference of about 3 weeks for me, so it's best to check the benefit before doing it. :)

I'd be a bit reluctant about that because the evening meals have to be higher in fat because the breakfast and lunches are relatively low fat.

I am concerned too about listing calcium and iron values because the highest deliverer of those is the breakfast porridge, so she may feel those meals are lacking, but along with the breakfast and lunch they aren't, IYSWIM?

Some of the loss will be from leaching into the cooking water/juices but depending on the vitamin, some loss could be due to heat degradation i.e. the heat causes the vitamin molecules to break down into other things. It's also possible for molecules to change conformation due to heat (which is how we get trans fats and why sometimes people are allergic to something raw but not when the same thing is cooked) but I don't know enough about vitamins to know whether this would apply or whether a change in conformation would matter.
Definitely... many things change their conformation with heat. I can look into it a bit more if you want but not till this evening...

I can confirm the allergy thing too - I'm allergic to raw tomatoes
:( ... cooked ones are fine thank goodness! :j I miss raw cherry tomatoes though... *sob*

got to pop out for a bit.

If anyone has googling fingeres then the raw weight values from the usda food database for vitamins, E and K and chloride and phospherous for shirl's ingredients per 100g, would be fabulous :D

Say if you're doing it tho, so we don't double up on tasks :)
