Sorry, that may have been me being thick, and probably was :o but I've always gone under the assumption that you bought the lot at the start of the month (with the exception of the fresh items perhaps) to benefit from the cheapest prices.

Now reading this back, it does actually sound a bit thick and it would be obvious to think about what you actually NEED each week. :o:o Told you I needed my hand holding!

There is no need to take the shopping list down, and you do state not to buy it all at once, but maybe a weekly shopping list would help?

    Sorry for being dense!
not dense at all, very useful :)

there are quite a few issues with a weekly list, not least of which is that we either very much constrain shirley as to exactly what batch cooking she has to do and when, or we offer much more freedom and looseness, which of course means we can't give a shopping list, cos we don't know what she'll choose to cook!

At some point when the basics are rolled out I'd like to programme in a feature where by clicking on the recipes she's going to make, shirl will have a shopping list built for her, but realistically this is a while away yet :(

What about giving shirl a starter kit of recipes? Maybe a week's worth? Then she has an idea of the work involved without it seeming too overwhelming.

If she sees she can spend £30 (for example) on food for *the week* it may just be that she feels it's achievable.

I think I'm probably being thick here :o so please bear with me - but I just don't see how this is any different to just following the first week of the plan ?

I know it's difficult, and you'll never please everyone, so it's great as it is. The website provides such a great resource, I wasn't aiming to make things more difficult.

The new feature sounds good, but can only be added as and when you have the time.

is it that there's not a list for just shopping for that starter week?

oh I didn't think you were raising a difficulty jwil, I think it's something we've been kinda grappling with here all along! The more we offer hand-holding, the more constrained shirl can feel, but if we offer lots of freedom, she may not know where to begin!

You just rightly identified one of the fine lines we walk in trying to best help shirl :)

I think it is regards to the batch cooking - the main meals are fine, but things like apple curd and bean pate etc are meant only to be made once or twice a month. If you made a batch of apple curd and then no one liked it, you would have to throw it. But denso's like me wouldn't be sure how much to make just to try it once or twice.

I really am not very good at this :(

Not thick at all Allegra. :) I just thought that maybe a really basic shopping list with maybe not *too* much batch cooking involved might help Shirl to see that it is do-able.

I dunno - maybe looking at the planner as a whole month might just do Shirl in! It's just one more thing for her to have to deal with.
