    Hi Lesley,

Could you post the recipe and method for this for me please, it sounds delicious! Thanks :)

Hi Hayley, it is from Rose Elliot's Vegetarian Cookery

    original recipe uses
    300ml hot water
    200ml oil
    300ml honey - I used 200g sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract - not sure you can taste this, so could leave it out
    450g rolled oats
75g sesame seeds, good for nutrition, but you can't taste them
    50g wheatgerm, left it out
100g shredded coconut, left it out
100g sunflower seeds, good for nutrition, but you can't taste them
    175g raisins
100g hazlenuts, chopped small, I used some elderly almonds

Mix the water, oil, honey and vanilla in a bowl
Add the oats, sesame seeds, wheatgerm and coconut and mix until well incorporated
Bake for 15 mins at 180C/gas 4. Reduce to 140C/gas 1 and bake for 1.5-2 hours, stirring every 15 mins. The Granola should be golden and crunchy
Mix in the sunflower seeds, raisins and nuts. Store in an airtight tin.
I used 2 large baking tins to cook it in and it made about 1100g, but I missed out 100ml of honey, the wheatgerm and coconut

I used the sesame and sunflower seeds, but you wouldn't know they were there, and I don't think the taste would suffer if the nuts were missed out.

I didn't read the method properly and mixed in all the ingredients including the nuts and raisins, before I baked it, but it didn't seem to matter much

It tastes like Jordans Crunchy Oat Cereal, which we used to have a lot, but even nicer

do the basic recipe (just use oil, water, sugar, oats and raisins) and it would cost a total of 81p and would make 21 x 50g portions, with 125ml UHT semi skimmed, breakfast would be 10p. Actually, if you miss out the seeds and nuts, the weight would be 250g less, so I would add 210g more oats and 40g more sugar I think

Yes I'll pop it into the article now. :)

Can I just ask whether the croation potato salad is an alternative for planner 1 or 3? Thanks.

I think we are fairly well covered now for variations, Weezl. Does anyone have variations for the following though?

    The snacks
    Chilli
    Cottage Pie
    The savoury puddings
    Rice salads
    The sandwich spreads
    Breakfast pancakes
    Omelette

    Thank you

I have been baking the savoury puddings as pies in the oven. Exactly the same recipe, but in a pie dish and baked in the oven instead of steaming

Edit - oops, see Weezl has said that already

depends if you want to keep tweaking it while I sort out the portions

have put 48 slices of bread in now. quite happy to change this one and ping it back

Hummus look like the next one. Nine uses, with 4 portions per time is 36 portions, there are 168 slices of bread, how many slices are there per portion, 168 doesn't seem to fit

is this ok, doing 1 at a time, or do you want to tell me all the ones you are having a problem with?
tee hee, sounds like a typo, lets go for 128, 4 slices pppm :) I don't mind holding on the tweaks, I trust you more than me!

don't get me wrong - the onion tart was tasty, but it didn't seem to work as per the recipe. My dish is 7" - I made it about 1.25" deep - I'm guessing I should have made it in a casserole dish rather than a flan dish!

I have done batch cooking before but my working hours are weird & I never know what time I'll be home thus whether to get stuff out in a morning or not ... I can get home anywhere from 5:30pm (very very unusual) to 7pm (common) or even 9pm (not that usual)

(oh, and can we have recipes in oz rather than g for the oldies?)

Chilli can be served as a filling for jacket potato- especially good if you can get spuds cheap as a whoopsie or from a farm shop

Chilli can also be served wrapped up in a tortilla

Any leftover chilli, as well as any leftover cottage pie can be wrapped in a pastry crust and transformed into a pie filling

Bacon and onion pudding - instead of making one big steamed pudding, make shortcrust pastry and fill it with bacon and onion for individual cornish style pasties

Rice and vegetables (as would be used for a rice salad) could be used as a basis of a soup

Sandwich spreads can be used as filling for clazone

Houmus can be used as a dip for home-made breadsticks or home-grown vegetables (carrots, celery, cucumber sticks)
  • I had another thought about lunches:- Crackers!

(You see this is what happens when I get up before 9am, thinking occurs )

A little light googling reveals some crackers that are basically flour oil and water. ( and an oat based one that could use oaty cereal I am sure).

If Kitty could spare a little she could liven up her lunches a little. The other interesting result of this was a recipe for crackers with ground walnuts in and another with nut butter in. Wondered if that might help with a nutrient or two somewhere?

If Kitty has any supplies to spare and you want anything testing, please shout. OH eats loads of crackers, so I'll probably be trying to make some soon anyway.

Life-wise, house sale is on final queries ( listed buildings and windows aaaaaaaaaargh), other things are progressing rather quickly and I am currently completing due dilligence gianty form :o. Even OH divorce is making progress. We could be in a very very different place in about a month. It's a bit  but also a lot :D.
Eat food, not edible food-like items. Mostly plants.

What do you normally do, then ? Do you mealplan at all or do you just take it as it comes ? If you come home at 9, do you then cook from scratch or do you just pull something from the freezer (I am thinking spanish omelette, amatriciana and bean curry ideal for the former, pizza ideal for the latter) ?

Apologies for bombarding you with questions - I am just trying to get an idea of how best to help people in your situation :)

Weezl, a bit of guidance please, when you can spare a moment - what is it that I am supposed to be doing re Kitty's batch cooking ? Just general advice or actual breakdown ? And is a weekly shopping list wanted or not ?

I don't mind doing whatever needs doing, but we've been getting a lot of negative feedback regarding the scariness of the batch cooking, and some mixed messages regarding the desirability or otherwise of a weekly shopping list - and as I really do not have that much time to spare, I'd hate to give it all to something that will be neither use nor ornament.

So I need you to put your PM hat on and tell me what is needed before I get stuck in..... Pretty please :)

Thank you for that granola recipe Lesley, it looks lovely :) It seems like you could vary it depending on whatever you have in the house at the time which is good :T
