Tia, bread recipe can be found here.

Shanks, well done you :T I like your kitchen - it has that shabby chic character going for it  And like Weezl, I like that pile of yeast, too !

Ceridwen, nice to see you back here. Don't rush off, will ya, the kettle's on (thought it might be double dip here in Shirley land !).

Poohbear, I'm sorry I've neglected to say it before, but all help with batch cooking stuff gratefully recieved. Just not sure where I'm at with it atm, but when I get a grip.... :D

And rainbow, I lost 4lb in the first week, but then started eating !!!!!!'s portions when he was away, so a couple have crept back on. I wasn't wanting to lose 'em though, but wasn't bothered about them going either, if that makes any sense. (I'm a curvy girl but not dying to be a stick insect - so can afford a loss while at the same time happy if it doesn't happen).

Arty, yes, carbon footprint is a part of it, as well as various political and economic factors (but this is not really time and place, I don't think) - from a purely personal viewpoint, "fresh" food that takes a long time to get to you will deteriorate and lose nutrients, therefore not delivering bang for buck.

I'm sorry, blame the seven hours in the library, but why is food miles a bad thing? I have never really understood-is it because of the carbon footprint driving food backwards and forwards causes? Or something else?

Sorry if I am being very stupid at the moment I promise I am a relatively intellectual individual generally but just have never understood this?
    :o:o:o
Some people might debate about the carbon bit but whichever way you look at it, it's very wasteful to use all that oil transporting food all the way around the world (or backwards and forwards between factories/warehouses/etc.) all the time.

I suppose it depends on if 5 a day plus other food is providing all nutrients (antioxidants/vitamins/minerals etc) needed. I haven't really gone on the amount per day. This is whats recommended for a vegan diet. If each portion is 80g, then this is about 5.6 servings per day, broken down into specific colours.

450 GRAMS DAILY FROM A VARIETY OF BRIGHTLY COLOURED FRUIT &VEGETABLES

    230 GRAMS DAILY FROM:

    BEETROOT
    BERRIES (STRAWBERRIES, BLACKBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES ETC)
    CHERRIES
    ORANGES
    PEPPERS
    PLUMS
    SWEET POTATOES
    TOMATOES

    150 GRAMS DAILY FROM:

    BROCCOLI
DARK GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES (SPINACH, KALE ETC)
LUTEIN IN BROCCOLI & DARK GREENS IS BEST ABSORBED WITH SOME FAT (E.G. OLIVE OIL, VEGETABLE MARGARINE ETC)

    70 GRAMS DAILY:
    CARROTS

Hope this helps. I think if a plant based diet can survive on 5.6 portions done in the right amounts, then perhaps this is what you can aim for.

Yeah we really wanted it but we needed too much to provide omega that we would have been living on sardines on toast for a month and nothing else which wouldnt have been healthy. So we cut that out and came up with other ways of providing all the vits and minerals but that meant the fish had to go im afraid xx
  • I'm sorry to be a COMPLETE PAIN with all these questions you've no doubt bashed out previously (just think of me as a Shirley, who maybe just discovered your site after the bank said that repossession was on the cards if payments weren't forthcoming (not quite *me*, but you get my drift, lol)...)

MILK. What's the philosophy behind the amount of milk, it being full fat, etc?
(I think I just skimmed calcium-gate, so not sure exactly WHY Shirley and family would have "3 xASDA Whole Fresh Milk 6 Pints" for the month...)

    Ta :)

Thanks for that :) - I don't like sardines anyway (too many ikkle pokey bones!) so would have had to substitute for another fish.

With one two year old in the house hold, and her mum visiting for a day a week, I am going through, 6 pints of milk a day! So 18 in a month would just not touch us. Even with the healthy vouchers that (alas I am not entitled to) at £3.10 a week for fruit, vegetables and frsh milk, we would still be spending well over! Eek
When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.
