Tomato pasta went down well tonight added a bit more chilli than suggested and it was lovely. Had a little less than the suggested amount of pasta and for us it was enough. Its the chilli tomorrow and after last times sweetness not looking forward to it as much as i should. Will do what the others have suggested and add more chilli and hope that works.
I agree the bread looks lovely will need to try it sometime.0 -
kezlou, sorry things have been hard with you
Also very :mad::mad: to hear about the nasty comments your DS had at school. How horrible, poor him and you.
Howlin did post some useful info about making a roux sauce on the last thread, does anyone know how to find it for Kezlou?
xx

I got the 4lb loaf tins from here . The Lets Cook shop on eBay, they were £7.99 each. A bit pricey I know, but they were the only ones I could find in the big size I wanted, and I will use them a lot, so I could justify it0

home made bread saves sooooooooooo much money though lesley, and you have total control of all the ingredientsI agree it is well justified
I made the onion tarte tatin vegan version tonight. It is lovely, but I shant publish yet because it wouldn't turn out neatly so I haven't got beautiful piccies to show you all and I am a stickler for food photography being a particular way :rotfl:

Lesley - how many slices did you get from those loaves? Just curious how the quantities compare with 2lb tins...just trying to do the maths b/c at the moment I hate the small loaves that come out right now as a lot of times we need 4 slices for a "sandwich" which feels wasteful...top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

Aless I usually allow 1 cm per slice for us, so the one that lesley linked to would yield 30 slices. So that's about a penny a slice with smartprice flour or 1.3p with white bread flour.

weezl I know you wouldn't mind me spending a bit extra on sandwich things, but I was finding alot of special beer jumping into the trolley!
I reheated the frozen risi e bisi for tea tonight. DS liked it alot, DD3 'wasn't hungry' whatever that means..! DD2 ate it but I'm not sure she thought it was the yummiest thing she's ever had.
I have one portion left in the freezer.
I had a portion of baked bean curry & rice that was in the freezer for lunch and my tummy has been full ever since!
I've still to bake bread and make snacks....I'd almost talked myself into getting a loaf out of the freezer but have just been reading frugaldom's thread which reminds me again why I'm doing this 'thrifty' food.
I'm not sure I've got into a proper routine with the bread and snacks. Or it could just be that some days I just feel too tired to be bothered.0 -

Awww Arty thats horrible i would have wanted to punch her at least you are a nice person who can lose weight if she wanted that woman will only ever be able to pretend to be nice. I am a big believer of what goes around comes around so while you might not be around to see it she will get her comeupance some day.
Hope you enjoy your meal wont let ex see post or he will be wanting that and we still have time left on the planner.
Dont be disheartened tomorrow is another day. xxxx0 -
Hi is this what you were refering to Weezl?
From HowlinWolfLorietta, this is the how to make a roux/white sauce tip that we are working on for Shirley. It is still very much a work in progress but do you think it would have helped you to make your first roux if you had had this? Can you think of anything else you would have needed to know or anything that we could add to help Shirley to make the sauce?
White sauce
A white sauce can be used for lots of things from a sauce for pasta, in a lasagne or moussaka, or in a meat, fish or veggie pie. You can also use it as a sauce for meat/fish/veggies if you add appropriate flavourings or for a fricasse (a white stew).
You can make a white sauce of any quantity. All you need are equal amounts of flour and a fat (e.g butter, hard margarine or a spread that is suitable for cooking) and a hot liquid (stock or milk for preference).
Put the fat in a pan and melt over a gentle heat, a higher heat will cause it to brown and will affect the taste.
When the fat is melted add in the flour. Stir. The flour will become incorporated into the fat, cook gently for a minute or two until you have a slightly sandy looking mixture with little craters in it (or honeycomb if you don't like the idea of craters in your food).
Add a good slosh of your hot liquid into the pan, stir. When all the liquid is incorporated into the fat and flour add another slosh. Repeat until you have a sauce of the desired consistency.
(If you want to be a little bit cheffy take the pan of the heat after each slosh of liquid is incorporated and give it a good beating with your spoon for a few seconds. This works the gluten in the flour and will add a lovely glossy finish to your sauce.)
When your sauce is the consistency that you want you can add flavourings if you wish such as mustard, grated cheese, herbs or onion, the possibilities are (almost) endless.0
