If Knutsford doesn't have one, try Alderley Edge or the place we had lunch ('cos it has one
). However, if you google 'dress agency manchester' there are a couple in Stockport and one on King Street. Then further down there is one in Frodsham (towards Chester). I would check out the King Street and Frodsham ones and see how much they charge to sell your items.
Also if you have loads of stuff which is too heavy to ebay (unless you get people to collect), there are some charities which will come and collect from you.0 -
If you've got lots of stuff you could do a sale like the US yard sales. On our last house move we leafletted the nearby streets as we'd left it too late to advertise in the local paper. It was amazing what we managed to sell. You need to be a little careful security wise if you're actually letting people in the house, we needed to as we were getting rid of furniture too. We put up some tables in the front garden, and a neighbour who helped put her things out too. We even managed to sell the pot plants I'd bought to dress the house for selling0

Dress agencies is a great idea! I've bought from them in the past, and the quality is much higher than any other type of shop for second hand goods.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

Also you said 'broke' which is one of the linguistic habits of the well to do - the not well to do say 'poor'.
Ahhh well now, this is also down to you I'm afraid. As you so rightly pointed out, if we think of ourselves as poor it is a negative way to think of ourselves that can position us as being downtrodden or a victim. I'm no victim, I for one intend to survive this life with style

Now, not having these means that one can be well to do - they just have to start looking at other conditions that get them there. And well to do doesn't mean obsenely rich - it means 'having enough and than some'.
This is exactly what I have been taxing my brain cells over this weekend - what is our enough? Amazingly, if it weren't for our mortgage, we would be at our "enough and then some" - wow  now that's exciting.
The other thing that I have been beating my brain cells over is gaining financial independence earlier than retirement age. Didn't come up with any answers but hey, if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it :rotfl:.
For your evening dresses, don't forget, it is prom season in the high schools at the moment, as my pocket knows only too well.

Hmmm I have never thought of myself as poor since the day that I started work (As a child I was brought up to believe we were poor - and we were) but I never actually realised that until I read your response Thrifty. I do however often say I am "skint" even when I have my buffer in the bank and far from skint.
I did the test too but cant remember the answers. Must go back and look again but I vaguely remember being a well to do.Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow -- Mary Anne Radmacher0 -
Procrastination has its good points - sometimes it saves us effort. Example? I was invited to go to Iceland to talk about something I know something about but not much. Am I interested? Probably but not enough to do it if I am not talking to a large group of people. True to my new policy of eating frogs in timely fashion I started doing it last week and then discovered that I don;t have all material (asked for it); after that there were other frogs; Paris; weekend...
Now, do you think I will be going to Iceland? I doubt it. Funny thing is that all Aiports there are closed but the Airlines have not cancelled the flights yet. Where is one supposed to land of the Airports are closed?
OH is right - he reckons that the only way I'll get to Iceland is if I drive to the North of Scotland and then rent a fishing boat to take me over. Defeats the purpose since I'll get there so sick that won't recover for days.
Maybe this is beyond the call of duty; although research is a heavy, hard and harsh business and a dangerous one at that.

Glad your procrastination paid off Fw! :T:T Research is indeed a heavy and dangerous business :rotfl:
Cheri - words are interesting aren't they? Having been properly poor as a child, I've never described myself as that as an adult. I also never describe myself as skint, broke, or anything else of the sort (certainly not now - but not even when I was working 2 days a week as a care assistant). As far as I was concerned, those words imply victim status 'oh poor me, I'm so skint' etc - whereas I always thought I *chose* to only work 2 days (while finishing phd) and so I *chose* to have that little money.
I very nearly slapped somebody once because they were telling me how poor they were - having just come back from their skiing holiday :rotfl: Had to point out that, no, they were NOT poor, they had just chosen to spend their money on skiing holiday. If they had gone camping, they would have had plenty left! It's about the choices you make! (well, it is in those circumstances anyway, I do understand that some people don't have jobs etc etc etc..)
How's the weekly list going FW?0 -
Cheery,
agree with all you wrote about 'poor'. In fact I wrote something along similar lines - but never having been 'poor' I did describe myself as that for sometime; before some sense got into me and I started getting my financial education (in the proper sense as combining theory, reflection and practice).
I am doing the planning and loving it. In fact I also thought that if I focus what I need to do for work can be done much faster (so Tim Ferris is right again) so that there is much more time for other things (work as apposed to job). This week though, I will have to revise the weekly goals upwards - courtesy of the Icelandic volcano. Was looking forward to going but the Universe seems to be saying 'Enough galivanting around the world! Develop 'strong bottom', as the old Jewish saying goes, and get on with writing and related.' So, no easy fame for me; time to work for it.

'strong bottom' indeed :rotfl::rotfl:
I wrote myself a list on Friday afternoon for this week, and for today - and for today's tasks I wrote out a detailed plan including phone numbers I needed to ring etc so I didn't need to waste time today faffing about, could just get on with the actual phone calls. Worked very well, and now have most of the day to get on with the big task (so why am I on here??)0 -

Audur "the deep minded" was one of the first women to Iceland. She left Scotland on a Viking Longboat with a crew after being widowed - and conquered a whole new country.
So there is a long tradition of Strong Women leaving our shore against the odds and striking out to Iceland - so why not you
Mind you, if Memory serves her father was descended from trolls and there is a whole history of "strategic political marriages" (Makes the tudors seem like !!!!! cats) ..................... so maybe we should look for another heroine for you :rotfl::rotfl:
Wee bit windy up here - and tipping down. Maybe I should go into the Ark Building Business
