Oh right I see now. I didn't realise you could go to someone's profile to see where they are. Bit weird that :eek:Bulletproof0

It has taken me this long to work out what the little green dot was - so I feel a bit of a fool.
Personally I had not even noticed that people could be tracked as I thought this happened only if they posted comments.
I can see why some people could find this unsettling and had not really considered it till now.
I just wish we did not all feel so defensive at the moment at this site has always been lovely and friendly and it is a bit scary when everything changes and you are then picked on for voicing a concern or asking a question.
I have always felt that the strength of MSE were its members in the Chat forum - not just Martin and it is really sad that someone just coming on to the site could get a negative and unrepresentative view."This site is addictive!"

Troo....you don't even have to go to their profile, you just click on 'quick links' at the top right of this page and the 'Who's Online' function is at the bottom.
Click on this and a new window opens up with everyone's name and what they are doing.Herman - MP for all!0 -
I haven't been here much so I'm still learning
It doesn't bother me if people know where I am, but I can see why other people might not like it.
Just wondering, what's the point of itBulletproof0 -
[aliasojo] My apologies, trust me my tone was not condescending (thats a prob with online communication, 90% of the time (except for my friends of course), my tone is *completely* misinterpreted).
With respects to privacy, it doesn't state you're username in the thread you're viewing (or shouldn't do)... forums certainly, it gives a count of the users in that forum. So privacy is still intact. Do remember vBulletin have to take all this into consideration for the legal side of things.
Yes, you are correct, I am quite young, turned 19 the day the new forums were activated, as a matter of fact (hence why there was some problems - I wasn't around when the problems occured).
And to answer the question about the Who's Online/Rating Thread comparison:
I look at things in two respects, the backend side, and the frontend side. Who's Online is more then just that section at the bottom of the index page. It's also a user count for each forum, to show how many users are viewing that forum. This shows how popular that forum is. The "Rate the Thread" shows the popularity of a thread. You get where I'm coming from now? (that wasn't mean't to sound rude, I was literally asking a question).
My point was basically, you're not shown, by username what thread you're in.... only admins can see that (they can see *everything*, except you're password of course), but thats to be expected. It only counts how many users are in a particular forum, and just so you know, thats a count from 90 seconds previous... so theres a chance you won't even show up in the count(its not possible to count everyone as is at the moment).
As for being opinionated... not true, remember I'm technically minded, so I have a totally different grasp of things then you would, and unfortunately, I can't always understand non-technically minded peoples reasoning - it does baffle me at times (like if I started babbling jargon, it'd "fly over your head"... its the same for techy people).. an example: "my password seems to be wiped out"... my instant thought "uh... wiped out? sorry, but the database *cannot* wipe out someones password, so what on earth is that meant to mean?"
As for the "stop s n i g g e r i n g" thing... not to be rude, but to be quite honest that didn't make me even smile, I don't find such things even remotely funny (yeah, I admit thats probably sad of me)
Indeed respect is a two-way street, and I never doubt that. I just occasionally get a little confused about how people see things
Also, I am not the one who makes decisions as to what is enabled and what isn't, I'm just the one who changes it :S

William .........the user online function allows anyone to click on a persons name without even going to find them in the members list or around the boards ......go straight into their profile and find out exactly where they are on the board ........can this function be disabled0

Ack, blast... sorry :S
As far as I'm aware theres not a way to disable it via the "front end back end" (the admincp... theres two backends for me... the code, and the admincp).... I'll try looking in the code for it, however, I may not be allowed to disable it - thats the Bosses decision (Martin and Brendan).

MSE_William wrote:And anyway, a stalker on a forum? so? They can't harm you, all they can do is post... isn't like they can find you're address, knock on you're door and say "muahahaha I was the one stalking you on the MSE forums!" :P
I've been on forums waaaaaaaaaay larger then this, and admined one of them too... trust me, stalkers are nothing on forums, harmless infact... its quite silly getting worried about it
Obviously my sense of humour differs from yours William along with my opinion.
Technically you are obviously very clever but as regards your posting
skills
Martin has asked for feedback on the site and however "silly" my opinion might be, it is worthy of consideration along with everyone else.
For what its worth I don't like the "Who Is Online" facility.0 -

Fair enough ,thank you William:)0 -
edinbughlass, I have the most dry sense of humour any of my friends have ever seen
plus I don't find jokes with any sexual reference in the slightest bit funny, its not a subject I've ever had interest in *at all* :P
Heh, I'll admit my posting skills aren't good at all - but I'm used to aduptedness/bluntness, its how I've operated on other forums since thats how they operate.
Its like when you live in another country for a while, you start to pickup their accent... its the same with posting on forums :S
Oh, and for what its worth, I like neither the Who's Online, nor Rating the Thread optionsSo tbh, if they wen't I'd be over the moon. Theres no such thing as a silly opinion, neither a right or wrong opinion, since its an opinion (I wonder just how many times I can say the word "opinion" in a sentence lol).
