 the melted chocolate / water mix isn't exactly smooth.....it that a problem?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I've just got the whisk going. I had to do the wooden spoon thing first, coz even I'm not daft enough to stick an electric whisk into a solid lump of butter and expect stuff not to go everywhere. :D

Anyway, I'm just about to start adding eggs and things. What I need to know, is anything time-critical from here on in? I mean if I get it all together and then start messing about with greaseproof paper etc., will it be ok? Or should I get all that ready before I go any further?

    Greaseproof first.

Mr be, this is the order of service for cake bakery:
    1. Assemble ingredients.
    2. Bring butter and eggs to room temperature.
    3. whilst waiting for butter to soften, prepare your baking tins and oven - ie: grease & line tins, get the shelf in the right place and switch on at the required temperature to preheat.
    4. Prepare cake mix and spoon into tins.
    5. Put tins in oven and set timer. Do NOT open oven before timer goes off.
    6. Allow cake to cool slightly in tin before removing and placing on a rack to cool completely.
    7. Whilst cake is cooling, prepare frosting and filling.
    8. Do NOT be blinded by lust for cake, which by now should be smelling pretty darn good. This will cause you to apply frosting before cake is cool enough, and will result in disaster.
    9. sandwich cake together with filling and apply frosting artfully to top.
    10. Enjoy.
