Left my ATM card in the machine and some one stole £200

It is amazing how many possible variations (and assumptions) there are in this type of "event".

I once tried to access my online banking and was refused access because of some alleged "inapropriate behaviour" relating to the use of my account, or words to that effect.

I discovered that my visa card had gone missing and remembered that I had not seen it since using the bank's ATM a couple of days previously.

I have always assumed that I left the card in the machine and walked away. I then assumed that someone had tried to use the card to get money and the bank had spotted the card being misused, and cancelled it.

No money was taken from my account.

Although I assumed all this; it is possible that I simply dropped the card in the street whilst transferring it to my pocket, and somebody picked it up. You have no memory of the actual moment of loss, or else you probably would not have lost it.

My experience suggests that if the card is lost after making a transaction you are unlikely to get a hit on your account.

However, as others have suggested, it may be possible for people to drain your account while the card is still active in the machine.

My husband was putting cheque into my bank account via ATM - so I gave him my card and PIN and told him what to do.

Guess what - he walked off. Got as far as to the door (this ATM was inside of the branch) turned around and the card was already swallowed.

I then had to go to the city to pick it up the next day in person as of course they wouldn't return the card to him.

So there is time out on other then cash withdrawals transactions (at least with Nationwide there is).

    I also smell troll.
  • There has been a high incidence of distraction robberies and card theft near where I work so I take the following precautions.

    1) I use an 02 card for my weekly budget, as good as cash, it normally has £50 or so on it for spending. If I lose it then the maximum I can lose is £50. My current account card stays locked in my safe and never used.

    2) Only ever use ATM's within the bank premises - never outside. This might seem over cautious but the atm's inside are very unlikely to be compromised and a safer bet than those in the high street that could been targeted.

    Works so far,

All ATMs have a number of fail-safes and the time between nothing happening and a card being retained is not long and is likely to be less than one minute. The bleeping sound is mainly for the branch staff (assuming it is open) and somebody somewhere will have a message on their screen if a card has been retained or there is a problem.

I used to work for a bank along a very busy street and stuff like this happened almost everyday.

It's really at the "Do you want another service?" point in the proceedings that if someone walked away they have left themselves vulnerable to fraud that they would be liable for.

I also smell a troll, but I fail to see what he/she gains from all this.

    To perform "perfect crime"?
The more knowledge you have about something the more chances of committing perfect crime (ie fraud in this case) you have.

Perhaps the OP withdrew the £200 themselves and are claiming someone else took it?

  • however someone could have quickly changed the PIN if the cardholder had walked away leaving their card in the machine with the original PIN already given.

The PIN could then be changed, the account emptied and the overdraft maxed out. The cardholder would be liable for all this.

original PIN is requested (again) before a change of PIN is allowed. Well always has been when i've done it anyway...

Exactly what the TROLL intends to gain ! To get other posters to believe and respond in good faith to a completely fictitious story. The naivity of some is unvelievable.

    29 Posts = TROLL WINS !!!

And I thought that Troll is someone who posts something very "out of the normal" or "controvertial" to provoke responses...
Nothing to do with "good faith" from anyone..

Obviously have to update my vocabulary a bit...
  • i smell a rat, or more likely a troll, it seems that they are asking these questions in advance to a staged 'someone stole 200 from me'.
She LEFT me, she LIED, and she made me foot the BILL !
