We used to have tatties growing in the dross from our AGA
I've had a disappointing day, the guy who was going to have a look at our car decided it wasn't worth the price.....so now I have a p'd off OH and a car sitting waiting in the garage for the bill to be paid... have to pay the Council Tax tomorrow and have only just got our wages paid into the bank (cheque so won't be cleared til Tuesday).
Plus I think a cheque we wrote to the vet has bounced because another cheque went in before the date I wrote on it... is that allowed? THEN I found out I had been charged for a 'free' DVD trial so I am NOT amused!!   :mad:DFW Nerd no 239.....Last Personal Debt paid off Nov 2012!

Well I got the desk area cleared :j Next to last load of washing (all the whites - blouses, t-shirts, poloshirts, socks, vests etc etc  ) is finished and the final load will go in in about 10 minutes - all stained stuff and bits I've found as I've been going along today
Overhauled DD's wardrobe. Everything that is age 5-6 and is summer orientated (except for some widesleeved vest tops which can be layered up with a thin jumper or cardigans) have been put in a bag. I'll keep hold of them for now until the winter REALLY sets in then I'll either put them on ebay (they're almost new) or pass them into the school for their Christmas Fair :rotfl:
Also managed all the washing up except 5 items - 4 cups (no room) & a casserole dish which is now in to soak. Tonight could be the first time in about 3 weeks that there hasn't been dishes next to the sink waiting to be washed
Discovered that we have Larder or Bacon beetles in our suite  That would be DD spilling crumbs all the time and then me not always noticing (especially when she brushes them onto the floor or down the sides of the cushions or under the sofa which I only hoover out once a week  ) Not sure what to do yet. Will just have to ban food on the suite and hoover it all over as often as possible. We now have no bottoms on the suite either as the only way I could get into them was to slice the "dust" sheet at the bottom off  Oh well.
Right, need to go and see whether little brothers uniform is dry yet as it was just damp this morningThen I'll have to sort out the next lot of washing:rolleyes: Oh, and tea which is sausage, mash & veg by request of DD
Later

I can't believe what I've done this afternoon - there's me thinking I couldn't do much today:
2 batches of cookies (26 in all - walnut & orange and coconut ones);
sort of date cake (didn't turn out ok but edible and I used up some old stores);
fresh fruit salad (had a pineapple just about to turn so thought I'd best do something with it) rest of the orange from the cookies, plus apple & grapes. Also made stuffed marrow (not going to make rum out of it now), and baked potatoes with herbs to go with - haven't any greens though, will it matter? Nah!
AND I did all the washing and wiping up and putting away too! I'm being a good wife for a changeHe WILL be suprised!

Hi, all. Thanks for the tips on slack/dross. Was just talking with OH about trying to keep our coal fire lit overnight. We usually let it go out in the evening, then have to relight in the morning. Anyone have a recipe for making the bricks?
Great excitement round here - we're verrrrrry close to the climate action, so loads of police and roadblocks. My friend was stopped by the plods this morning, and then had to take a huge diversion home, as her shortest way was blocked! As I drove home, though, Drax power station was still going.
As requested; Lemon Curd.
In a bowl mix 75g caster sugar and grated rind of a large lemon (I use a zester, as I like the big bits of peel). Add juice of the lemon and 2 large eggs. Add 50g unsalted butter, and place the bowl over a pan of just simmering water. Stir until thickened (about 20mins). Store in sterilised jars. Keeps in the fridge for about 2 weeks.
Lovely with shortbread. Mine was all finished at work. Made a lovely present for a friend - stack of heart and star shortbreads in a pretty bag (with a gusset, btw).
DH will be home soon, and taking me to pictures. Bearing in mind we're child free, what has he persuaded me to see - Superman! He can tell DS. Icemaiden - we're coming over your way, so wave if you see 2 penguins!
Had leaflet from our local Arts Centre, and John Hegley will be there on my birthday. Children are off school for a training day, and DH has a day off work. So as long as DH extracts his digit, and gets tickets, will be a good day.
Did some excavating under my desk. I've been sitting there for a year, and found a lovely laptop bag. Never seen anyone use it, so I liberated it and it will make a great Flylady mobile office - loads of pockets, and interesting flaps and toggles.

Spent all morning going cross eyed at the computer trying to find accomodation for six of us this weekend at Glasgow or Ayr.
Seems there is a Robbie Williams concert on and so no rooms can be had!!!!
Finally tried Haven holidays and booked a gold standard caravan which has three bedrooms - got the last caravan like this and also saved £200!
Will take Dad's urn with us so he can return to Scotland.
Need to go to solicitor tomorrow to get original copy of the will for probate and then post it off.
Seem to have been doing something every day and it is starting to catch up with me.
Hugs to everybody."This site is addictive!"

Evening all, I am exhausted just reading what everyone does. I am getting very lazy these days, I blame the weather. I have at least managed to sort out the paper work today and intend doing some baking tomorrow.
P-P, I'm so sorry about your friend, it is a dreadful thing to go through. Good wishes to you as well.
Penelope Penguin, I think you must live near me, we drove by Drax this morning and also saw some Army vehicles going that way. I've got the candles ready in case the power goes off although we lit candles last night hoping they would warm the place up a bit. I refuse to put the heating on in August.
Have a good evening.0 -
Afternoon everyone :hello:
Been out and about AGAIN today! This time it was down to Bedford for a lunch with a friend that was on my teaching course. She had enough of small little children who couldn't read or write and so has jacked it in to do supply teaching to older children...... who hopefully can read and write .
skystar wrote:VickyA: Don't know if you have this sorted yet but with First Direct you can change your name over the phone (my sister worked there for a while). To be honest although HSBC and First Direct are part of the same group very few of their procedures are similar. I work for HSBC and found this from talking with my sis.
Thanks skystar, just 'phoned First Direct and they're sending me out a form to fill in.
Not much else to report, other than MIL is coming over tomorrow to take me out for lunch. I'm worried that it's slightly more than a friendly chat.

Hi all, once again no time to read all the posts - apologies. Been a bloody horrible day here, weather is miserable, kids are miserable and so am I. Found myself shouting at DS (4) this afternoon for no real reason, so feel like a right c*w now. Will be pleased when kids are back at school and we can get back to some sort of routine.
Anyway today managed to make some blueberry muffins, and a chicken dinner for tonight, with HM sage and onion stuffing for the first time ever. Really wanted someone to run an errand to the local Co-op but everybody was busy, so decided to make my own. Chucked an onion, some frozen bread (cos that's all I'd got) and sage from the garden into the food processor, made into little balls and cooked for about 25 mins in the oven. TBH it was the nicest part of the meal and I could have eaten a plate of that alone. However, I think I might have to dig the Gaviscon out of the cupboard for later. Hope you all have a good evening,

we always bought a bag of dross from the coalman, it used to be cheap but not now likely, it used to be mostly very small bits of coal, i guess he probably riddled it first ( sifted )
you should be able to keep the fire going pen pen, if you are able to close it down and put some dross over it0
