  • I know how the op feels, i went straight into 3rd year and had no idea how to write essays either! We had a week long summer school, which did show us examples of essays, and we have had plenty of help through the year. Although i am still really bad at them, i bought that study skills book before i started as well, but didn't find it all that great!

Maybe it's cause i never passed english in school, i could never write essays or anything like that in school or college either.

And this year i've might have a dissertation to write!! :o

I feel I have to comment on the heated debate:
Personally, I was taught how to write essays at the beginning of my Master's degree. My BSc (some years earlier) had been in Maths, and even at school I did science 'A' levels and so had not written any essays since 'O' level English. So I needed the lesson, and I am far from shocked that someone can begin a degree without knowing how to write an essay. It is also worth mentioning that the support for essay writing included an explanation of the seriousness of plagiarism, and appropriate ways to use different kinds of sources.

What does shock me is that the OP's university failed to provide the necessary support. Those who responded with anger to the OP's efforts to find on-line the learning support that was not available at the university should perhaps save their indignation for those colleges that are far more interested in collecting tuition fees than in doing the job for which they are paid.

i suspect that most of us were highly surprised that there was no support in any way at the university - through the department or through more generic skills training.................... you know, through all the student services that student fees go towards! ;)

i also think that speaking to a lecturer one-to-one for feedback will be infinitely more useful than an online service offering an essay of an undetermined quality. that would always be the best advice to give!

Don't all universities and colleges have academic writers in residence, who are there to offer support and help with academic writing?

I know my relatively small university college does.
