Have you asked to see your tutor, or whoever is marking your essays so they can expand on feedback?

Personally I find it shocking that students are even accepted for university without being able to write essays!

I think it totally depends on the course and the uni, ONW - you know I speak from experience here. I'm soon to complete an access course and move onto uni as a mature student, and my college is fantastic about giving one-to-one personal tuition, the college has seminars on things like numeracy, writing skills, over the easter break the college has study skills courses, how to pass exams lectures, that sort of thing.

I do totally agree however that is someone is in second year and is unable to write an essay that is shocking - no offence due to the OP. However I also guess it depends on what they are studying, I remember someone on this site a while ago doing an HND in tourism and they had never been taught how to write an essay - they didn't have to for their course. I hate to talk about the dumbing down of education as I am about to spend the next four years studying for my degree, but I do understand that you can do a degree and not have to write an essay.

Everyone writes essays at school though. Even though they are not exactly of academic calibre, the process is still pretty much the same.

Also, why not just look at journal articles? These are essentially essays.
  • I would suggest the Palgrave study skills book. 'How to write better essays' You could perhaps draft some different versions of the essay (maybe 2/3) and arrange a meeting with your tutor perhaps a week before submission to clarify the correct layout if you're unsure. It's a really good book and has certainly improved my writing skills.

The Ou's book 'hoe to improve your assignment results' is one my uni strongly suggest reading.

    Which Uni are you at?

Are you sure your uni doesnt offer study skills? Every uni i looked at when deciding where to apply had a student servies dept and study skills groups, or peer to peer mentoring- basically its students assisting other students to fine tune cerrtian skills

They may not advertise the fact, a lot of these groups are held but it is up to you to find out when/where they are

You should ask one of your lecturers to go through an assignment with you and show you where the need for improvement is. This should be standard feedback. Do you actually go and book a tutorial with your lecturer once you have established your grade, or do you just look at the grade, feedback and then wonder how you can improve?? You should, best practice, be having a 1-2-1 with a tutor after every single academic paper has been marked. My tutors are sick of the sight of me - i am sure! However, my skills have improved month by month as a result of this.

what do you need assistance with?

We can all give general advice like...what essay should include and where and that it should usually written in academic 3rd person and the likes.

Without offending...How on earth have you made it into the 2nd year if you are struggling with essay writting? As I say, I am not being funny here, but you must be doing some of it correctly to progress into year 2

why can no one just help the op instead of slagging them off, I find it really hard to write essays some people just arent literary minded. I think if you start of with ur intro explain what ur doing and a bit about the topic ur essay is on, then move onto looking at arguements based on pluses and negatives and then conclusion looking at evidence and which one u agree on.

It might help if u tell us what ur essay is on as each one can be different.

The op has been given good advice such as go to see the Study Skills department of their uni.

We don't really need to know the subject of the op's essays as it would be seen as plagarising if we helped them with their work. We should not be expected to help with the content, as we already have, give general advice.
