Examples of Essays

Options
Hi, I was wondering where I can find examples of essays, university standard to get an idea how to write one for my assignment. I've never seen one and was hoping I can learn from the example. tutors don't seem to like to show us anything.

Any help would be great.:A

  • What year are you in?

You should not need to see examples of academic work if you have been taught how to write an essay. If you're struggling you should book an appointment with your study skills department.

Plenty of examples on the net - it is very much about what particular course you are doing - but I would look at a resource such as this:

Examples of all types of essays, assignments, reports etc

    Hope this helps

I've never been taught how to write an essay and my university doesn't have a study skills department, or anything like that. I found the best way of practising my essay skills was to try different things out and see what gave me the most marks and best feedback.

Why won't they show you? Mine did. The secnario was completely different - so no chance of us cheating by copying someones idea. All we were shown was a good, muddled and an ok one.

Everyone has their own essay-writing style. Personally, I think it's better to finely tune your own style rather than try to copy what you think an essay 'should be'. Feedback sheets are standard, and you can always ask for further feedback if you want it.

I have been looking at this site but can't figure out how to find examples of types of essays, assignments, report etc, is there a link that I haven't found and are they free to browse. Many thanks to everyone who has posted on here.

I am in my second year and no real help has been given to us, just lectures that sometimes are not relevant. Yes we get feedback but not enough to make me understand how to improve on my writing.

    Any help would be great.:o

I find it quite worrying that the second semester of year 2 and you haven't picked up the art of essay writing. This is supposed to be mastered in year one where your marks don't usually count towards your final grade.

When you are a student at uni, it is your responsibilty to ensure you understand your feedback and this could involve booking a tutorial with your lecturer. You will not get spoon-fed and you should learn how to stand on your own two feet. Surely at your uni there will be a department that will help you with your writing skills, there is one at my uni and it is a tiny Uni. You will not find it useful to look at other essays if you do not have a clue how to write an academic paper as you may be tempted to copy their essay style which may not fit in with yours.

I think the other poster was recommending you purchase/borrow the Stella Cottrell Study Skills book. I think it is law that most students have to buy it.

I am not saying I am perfect, but from hard work, making sure I booked regular tutorials and learning from my mistakes, if I work hard in this semester I am easily going to graduate this summer with a first degree. I am not the most intelligent person in the world, but I have worked hard and this is despite having two young children, husband, a house to look after and the various voluntary work that I do.

It was the second year when writing critically was introduced to us, which would've been helpful in the first year. I have bought that book which is a god send to try and improve my writing. I wish they introduced this to us in the first year not the second. I am passing my modules but would like todo better.

We have asked but they never shown us anything. If I was shown a good, muddled and an ok one like they did with you, I'm sure I would understand more of what is needed.
