  • You can always hire stuff... I did Mt Kilimanjaro in 2008 and hired most of my kit, worked out about £90 for the stuff I needed. Saved me buying stuff I would only use the once. Nearer the time I might be interested in coming along one day for moral support but I'm right down near London x

They better had! I'm sure they do - my nephew flies between Gatwick and .... somewhere in Scotland :o - regularly. And he's a student.

  • I work for a cheapy airline so might be able to jump on a staff travel seat, however they are poor at availibility.

I will tell you right now I'm not an expert, I hate walking and I have no idea why I signed up to do it. But yes if you need any advice, I can attempt to help. My main issue was acclimatising though.

Boots, sleeping bag and liner (if needed) definitely get yourself. If you need cold weather stuff though (depending on when you are going!) you can hire it. Think I used Trek-Hire UK or something similar, but there are lots of sites available.

Do not skimp on boots. I paid £100 for some leather ones from a high st outdoor store and even though I stupidly didn't wear them in that much, I didn't get even one blister!! make sure they have ankle support too.x

Thanks Elantan. It's great finding things to excite him. He's doing an OU degree at present partly for the degree and partly to learn how to use the tools which are all new to him. As his profession is all computer screen based it's a hard transition but he's more positive than he has been for ages.

This would be a great goal on the physical side as he's practically housebound at present so baby steps and big target to aim for.

  • Well i have always gone on the provisio that boots need to be slightly larger as feet swell when walking. Did a nice hike today, but stupidly wore cheap socks so have a blister on my little toe..damn. So good seamless socks are a must ( reckon daughter has swiped mine for her Docs :( )
I agree pay the most you can afford- i paid about £50 a few years ago and they are comfy. But not today. lol Maybe time to get a new pair i am thinking.

  • Yes, don't forget you have to comfortably wear socks too (i had to allow for 2 pairs)
My socks weren't seamless but they were made of two layers, I'm sure there was probably a scientific explanation as to why but I don't know what it is!

  • The two layers cushion against the blisters and allow air to circulate in between, so are healthier for the feet. Err I think :)
