Hi all ... well it seems there is some interest in this plan ...and i reckon the more the merrier .... the plan is in 2011 i and anyone else wanting to join me on the journey will be walking the West Highland Way ..

Now loads of things have to be discussed and loads of things planned ...i just know it is something i have always wanted to do ...however i am extremely unfit and still have a frozen shoulder. so that's the reason it's 2011 and not this year ...hubby is planning on walking also but he really could do with some more men cause much as he likes women he doesnt wanna spend all his time with a bunch of women ...so any men out there interested ...please join in

the aim of this thread is to keep a diary of achievements , have discussions, make plans and seek advice (or pass it on) so any advice ideas etc feel free to add

anyone interested please feel free to add your name

things i think will need to be discussed ..

    when we are going
    what we will need
how fit we need to be
are we camping/hostelling /bed and breakfasting etc
how long we roughly plan on taking
are we doing it for a charity (think there might be a split decision on this one ...and thats fine)

    Hi,

Might be just me, or could be OH too, wasn't sure if it was a females only thing from the initial mention on Hypno's thread. Got two adult DS's, one especially is into hiking/walking, so will mention it to them, but probably nearer the time when things are more firmed up.

We've all camped before, but for walking we've normally used day sacks so not carried all the kit with us. If there's a large group it wouldn't cost that much each for things to be shuttled to the next stop.

No problem with camping/hostels or b&b.

Other thing is probably food, do people cater for themselves, or all muck in at least for some meals.

great to have the two of you on board ..

was thinking about having all our stuff transported See ...it is deff something to be considered as i imagine a backapck etc is gonna be heavy to carry all the way ...the down side to that is we have to be in a specific place every night and therefore it ties everyone down ...this might not be a bad thing though ...what does everyone else think?

It's going to be easier for the less experienced ones like me to have things transported, for me being tied down to set stops would be good. Having a schedule means people who can't do the whole walk could come for the days they could too.

Especially with hostels b&b's you'd need to book in advance anyway to be sure of a place.

One other alt is camping barns, DS1 has had to use them in Snowdonia when camping had to be abandoned due to weather. We've stayed in wilderness hostels in Canada when part of an organised walking tour there, I think they're similar.

Main danger is if the weather's really really bad and we can't walk, what happens?

yeah i totally get where your coming from see ... it makes perfect sense ..

weather wise from what i have read the best time to do the w.h.w is may midge season hasnt quite started and the weather is usually drier ...the truth is though in Scotland we get rain ...we get it alot ...in fact some would say all we get is rain ...so we have to be prepared for this eventuality yes we can organise the trip around known better weather times ...but we have to be prepared ... at the beginning of last May for instance it was snowing ...yikes

Just thought for people joining for odd days, as long as mobiles work, they could phone to get in touch to find out where we were.

I think even for camping, if we're quite a large group we'd need to prebook sites. It depends on how big the group turns out to be, and if everyone choses the same accomodation choice.

For accomodation avoiding the bank holiday weekends, as everywhere is busier then. Downside is I know the bank holidays are a perk for people working as it means less days off work.

My attempt at Hadrian's wall had to be given up partway, it was torrential rain for a couple of days, and you couldn't see to walk. Then the trail needed to dry out a bit, so didn't have enough time to finish it.

thats a great idea see and deff something we need to plan and discuss...wouldnt it be great if some people met us on the way ...even if you cant/dont want to do it all a wee day might just be perfect ..

was thinking also having a few meet up's so we can meet chat etc and get some practise in .... Hadrians wall would be a good one to do a bit of ...

i know bob and i have talked about doing some walking together ... right bob ?

and for those further down south i could arrange to meet somewhere and camp were we can meet up (everyone can come it isnt just me ...just didnt want to presume anything)

ok i am going to a police auction tomorrow in Dalry (skinty is ya interested?) to see if i can pick anything up for the walk ...i dont know about the rest of you but i want to do it as cheap as i can ...so police auctions usually throw some interesting things up for sale at cheap as chips prices ..will let you know how i go

Already given El orders for Police auction- as in the tall variety in full riot gear;) Come in very useful on the trip i would have thought.

Yes dear we are going on a few walks for Practice, if we can find the right time.

Over and out - might as well have a lurk elsewhere. Bob x
