Ps, has anyone grown butternut squash before - does it griow across the ground or upwards???

Have a look at this site... I think that I'm now not going to have enough room for the 15 squash seedlings that are on the kitchen table at the moment...

well got bored of waiting so i put my spuds out and my onions... Actually i chucked a load of spuds away as i had way too many. Sown in pots more brussels, peas and perennials.

Losing heart now to be honest. Might forget the big plans for this year and just put some carrots out, the rest can wait another year.:(

At least all my fruit is out and that's what dd2 loves the most, so she'll be kept in strawberries and blueberrys this summer. :) Dunno about the goosegogs, raspberries and blackberries - cheap ones so may not grow owt this year.

Does anyone know how many years untill fruit trees actually start producing fruit?

Hiya, it grows across the ground, you want about 8" between each seed if you can, I know that sounds a lot.

They grow really big leaves, and its quite exciting really, as the leaves grow you look under them and you will see little squashes, we call them squashlettes :D when you see these, cut off the leaves so the squashletts can get the sun, if you have some stones, bricks or whatever to rest the squashes on, this is good, otherwise they lay on the ground and this isn't good, if one gets eaten, don't worry just leave it there. Hopefully, said mouse or whoever will carry on eating that one and leave the rest :j

Edited to add, they are quite prolific so 15 is more than enough, we only do 9 and we do have squash in the freezer from last year.

What fruit trees? Are they on dwarf root stocks?

Generally quite young if they're on dwarf root stocks. My apples and plums fruited at 2 or 3.

Pears take a bit longer, hence "Pears for heirs", but again a dwarf rootstock will speed it up.

Don't give up heart. Annual veg growing is hard work. I pretty much gave up (apart from a few pots) a few years ago and concentrated on fruit, herbs, salads, and wildlife plants.

It's much less full on and gives me ample time to actually enjoy being in the garden, watching things develop and the wildlife doing it's thing.

Fruit is a lot more expensive than veg generally, and is the most pesticide ridden. I love watching my apples develop through the year (Saddo that I am!),

    Happy Easter everyone :easter_ba

Well what a fab day it's been today, after the horrible forecast that we had been given earlier in the week. Loads of sunshine and even an outside barbie.

Veggie plot is looking sooooo bare, can't wait to see it looking busy again. So tempting to grow everything now, but so far I am resisting not getting too carried away.

I will now be hosting my auntie's 75th birthday bar-b-q in July, so even more reason to have an impressive veggie plot this year

Have sat outside and potted on 3 types of tomato plants, and courgettes ....... didnt have the heart to throw any away, so will be giving some away to family and friends.

And after having such a good day, whilst zipping up the greenhouse (in the conservatory) I have just managed to knock over a pot of pertunia seedlings so have now got to try and pot them up, they are still quite small too :(
A creative mess is better than tidy idleness :D
