I agree, but still suspect its likely to be occurring and that some people will continue to attempt this sort of behavior.

Just about every economic number at the moment is going the right way.

It depends if you're going by the Gordon Brown unreality experience or the real numbers.

    What Brown is boasting about:
Overall, the number of unemployed fell by 33,000 to 2.45m in the three months to January

    BUT
The number of those classed as economically inactive shot up by 149,000 in the quarter to January to a record level of 8.16m, driven largely by an increase of 98,000 in the number of students. The total amounted to 21.5 per cent of the workforce, the highest since 2004.
[There was] a fall of 61,000 in private sector employment in the final quarter of 2009. “The jobs market for the time being is still being propped up by the public sector but the public sector job creation machine is about to be switched off.”
Long-term unemployment, measured by the total of people out of work for more than 12 months, rose by 61,000 to 687,000, the highest level since 1997.

To be fair, you were talking about a retail bank, the one the government is setting up is an investment bank. They also plan to put a universal service obligation on the existing retail banks.

    What is a FTB?

What happens if you sell your home, clear the mortgage, bank any profits, move into rental or parents for a few months and then buy another house with a new mortgage?

    Are you a FTB again?

    The answer's still no. ;)

Not quite, Brown and Darling are doing the usual trick of just shouting about the "good" numbers. If you look at the detail in the red book, you'll see the disastrous figures that they're keeping quiet about.

Great. Last year petrol goes up and people who are buying new cars get some money off. This year petrol goes up and people buying a 250k house get some money off.

    EXCUSE ME!

When do I get a bit of free money? Or is the deal that I just pay and pay while other people get various bits of money?

Want a new car? Save up for one.

    Pretty much.

I haven't had chance to properly look at what was announced today, but my initial calculations suggest I will be about £3,200 a year worse off in cider duty.

Haven't checked out the new tax credit / ch ben rates yet, perhaps popping out another kid will cover it? :D

That's a mighty conservative estimation!

    It's up 10%, not 1% :D
