Whilst on the topic of freezing, can I add that I never really used our two freezers (one combined with fridge in kitchen and a second one in garage) efficiently until I started keeping an inventory of ALL contents on an Excel spreadsheet pinned up in the kitchen. I was for ever sticking bags in one of the freezer spromising myself "I'll make something useful with that" and then it would get forgotten about. But now, when everything is listed individually I can check the spreadsheet inventory for each freezer and see what needs using up. It also helps me to use up the 2005 tomato purree, etc made with our home grown tomato glut before that made in 2007 and aids stock rotation. And yes, labelling is important. Once I didn't bother, feeling certain I would remember what it was, and I subsequently dumped a plastic bag of gooseberry purree into my minestrone soup, thinking it was chicken stock.
  • Is it ok to freeze chicken roll? I always buy the big value pack but it always goes out of date before I can finish it (or I end up using it in almost ever meal I can!)
Also if it's ok to freeze chicken roll does that count for any cold meat slices?

    Hi PurpleSkies,

I don't know about chicken roll because it's not something I buy, but I often buy and freeze cooked ham when it's reduced (on it's use by date) with no problems.

This thread may help: Can I freeze packs of cooked meat?

  • I am getting into the OS thing of freezing leftovers no matter how little ;) but sometimes I am just not sure what can be frozen. Eg. If I have made a carbonara which contains egg and creme fraiche... can I freeze that, defrost it and microwave it? Pasta dishes? Risotto? Is it safe to freeze cooked rice, defrost it and micro it?

    What meals do you freeze?
  • There are lots of suggetsions on the Batch Cooking thread ;) I'll add this thread to the What can you Freeze thread to keep ideas together :D

Hi, i am new to a role of economic houselady and would need a piece of advice about the food freezing. I read that many of you are cooking in bulk and then freezing the leftovers for later. But I am sure there are some bules about what is possible to freeze and what is not. Is someone would make me a list of what I can freeze I would be grateful. I eat almost everything, except custard and pastry. These things are never in my home.
  • The thread exists already :j I'll add your post to it ;)

    Help wanted.

Tomorrow I am going to make a chicken curry using chicken from drumsticks and thighs I roasted today, a tin of Tescos Value curry sauce and my own sultanas and coconut. I have never really frozen HM stuff before and am wondering if I will be able to freeze this.

Also are there any tips anywhere as to what you can HM and freeze or not?

    Thanks.

    Hi Reverbe,

Your curry should be fine to freeze providing the meat hasn't been previously frozen while cooked. It's fine to freeze meat once while it's raw and then once after it's been defrosted and cooked.

The question of what can and can't be frozen came up earlier today so I'll add your post to that thread to keep the suggestions together.

This thread is useful too if there is anything you aren't sure about as there is always someone around who will help:

    Hi Pinkwinged

That's very helpful of you. I had previously had the chicken frozen when raw so that clears things right up.Thanks.
