Just back from my run. Only managed 20 minutes, but have decided to stop beating myself up about it, it doesn't really matter if I'm slower at getting to 5k than other people, as long as I get there in the end.

Had a stitch the whole way and a stomach full of dinner and a couple glasses of wine :rotfl: now where is that wine...

Well done Drea - you're exactly right, doesn't matter when we run the 'magic 5kms' - just the fact that we are running is great.
    Now proud Mumto3 :j

I've been really pushing it to try get that 28 minutes and I think I need to take a step back, all I've been managing to do is put myself off running! Just going to try run as long as I can and if I get to 28 minutes then great but if not, no big deal. I'll get there eventually :)

Does anyone think they "hit the wall"?! I was thinking that today - I think when I was on about 27 min, and I really thought I would stop, but I made myself keep going. I know we're not at marathon level (not yet ;) ) but surely it happens to all runners regardless of the fitness or ability?

    Hi Sammy_Girl :D

Just to let you know you havent hit the wall - hitting the wall is an experience that occurs when your body runs out of an easy accessible energy source called gylcogen and has to switch to fat burning.

The reason hitting the wall only happens to marathon runners is because the body has enough energy stores for around 20 miles of running. Good marathon training and running at the correct pace can also aid to extend this.

You may well have felt exhausted though - we all get that sometimes, especially when training into new distances (whatever they are).

Good luck with the rest of you training, if you want a nice plan moving forward for 3 times a week, just keep extending one run as slowly as you like while keeping the other 2 shorter. This will build you into 10k and into a more standard type of plan. Remember as you move forward to try and not break the 10% rule (no more than 10% of current mileage added on each week) and have a drop back week when you need to!

Did my week 2 run 1 this morning. Can't believe how hard it felt to run 90 rather than 60 mins but I did it even if I now feel like my legs don't want to run ever again!

week 7 run 1 done. My knees hurt though so I think my trainers need renewing. I still had to fight with myself to do the whole run as I wanted to slow down all the time. I'm not managing to zone out and I think that has to do with running inside so I'm going to take to the streets on Tuesday morning :-).

Bought a new pair of saucony grid trainers from wiggle as they had a sale on, hopefully that will help me with my sore knees.

    Hi everyone!
I've started the couch to 5km program this past week, after reading a couple of pages of this :)

I decided to start on wk2, as I've been running of my own accord without a program for a couple of weeks, and have just got back from my wk2 run3, wasnt too bad, but I am definately not looking forward to wk3!

I've only read the first few pages of this thread, and this last one, but its really encoraging to see people who started talking about their problems on wks 1 2 and 3 who are now running 20mins+. Well done!!

Haven't managed to start yet, as weather has been (predictably) pants. But, tomorrow and the rest of the week is meant to be OK, so I'll be starting bright and early tomorrow morning :) Wk1run1 here I come!

Drea I think I know what the problem is. You are worrying too much about the extra three minutes. Next time you go out why don't you plan to just run for 25. Then if you feel O.K. do one more, then maybe another one and then just for luck one more.;)
    You can do it.
