  • I can't do anything other than praise Santander.

We had a 15% deposit for house worth £140k.

Agreement in principle was done within 3 days, valuation within 10 days and full offer a day after.

Transaction took a long time (nothing to do with mortgage) and we completed yesterday. No hiccups from Santander at all!

Free survey, £500 arrangement fee (joke) and £250 cash back.

    :T
  • Can I just remind you all that Santander (Abbey) is one of few banks now that have not needed to borrow money from the government as they are and have always been responsible lenders. Therefore this can lead to more checks having to be carried out on applicants. Brokers do have a habit of sending incorrect information to Santander and then think it can just be deleted and re-entered correctly which causes major delays.
  • Hi everyone,

abbey had the valuation of the house I'm trying to buy done yesterday.

Is it possible to phone up and get the results? Or just wait and see what comes in the post?

It can take a couple of days for the info to get back to Abbey but you can ring and they can give you the info.

I'm almost 3 months into a very straightforward application with Santander. Hope to complete in 2 weeks. Hang in there and if you have an opportunity to start again with another lender, take it!

I agree. It does seem that most of the people that have problems with Santander/Abbey do use brokers. I do understand those who use brokers when they can get you good deals, but why do people chose to use brokers when you could get the same deal direct? My thinking was that using a broker when I didnt have to adds an extra person into an already confusing procedure which is why I went direct. This lead to no problems with Santander and a very quick offer.

Just my observations in reading this thread and some food for thought for those considering using Santander/Abbey for a mortgage

Weve been using a broker for our application and so far it hasnt been an issue

Weve pulled out of the first house purchase and have switched to a second, the first offer came within the week (inc valuation) and we submitted the rejiged mortgage application wednesday 14th, mortgage has now been approved subject to valuation which has either been done yesterday or monday.. Our broker is expecting the offer to come back this wednesday..

We've also used a broker for our application to the Abbey/Santander and we got the approval letter over the weekend. However, it has several errors; repayment/interest only split and they added all the fees on something we didn't want. Prior to that they arranged a valuation rather than the requested homebuyers report and didn't tell anyone when the credit card rejected their payment request as suspicious which also delayed things for 2 weeks.

To be honest I can't be sure that most of these aren't the brokers fault in just getting details wrong. Overall they are just minor annoyances and go to show you have to stay on the ball yourself. When requested each problem has been fixed fairly promptly.

Our broker told us that Santander had moved the entire Abbey operation from Glasgow to either Dublin or Belfast during the early part April which couldn't have helped.

Yep, should be. Mine was done on a Wednesday afternoon and offer arrived that Saturday.

    Hope it comes quick! :j

My valuation was done on Friday and the offer sent out the same day. I haven't received it yet but phoned Abbey to get the results of the survey (which were fine) so all looking good.

Just got to wait for that letter to arrive. Post is useless in my area.
