sadly it has finally come to the point where i need to shed weight before people mistake me for Mr Blobby or even worse Noel Edmunds!
i am 47 and have that beautiful male pregnancy profile that even i am beginning to get tired of my excuses and making fun of with my kids!-i measure myself in new currency--i am 83kgs and 1,76m--and think my BMİ must be about on the top end of over-weight if not slightly obese.
i went to look at a gym with my wife today and took the unsubtle comments of the' try to be funny ' assistant as not so amusing!!-but the truth often hurts--and hits me in the wallet!!--at least the suggested diet might cut our food bill!!--i gave up drinking 4 months ago with little change to my belly--but i am saving the amount i will be spending on the gym!--what good points are there to look and ask about in a gym--apart from the price!--the place looks spacious with good equipment -its all new and fresh and clean--it has a tennis court and 5 aside football pitch and they have fat men teams lol-it doesnt have a pool but to me thats not important---any good questions to ask,,,,
    mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.

    Hola peeps!

I'm using my housemates scales but they are rubbish: the kind you have to tap with you toe, they flash up "00.00" for a millisecond and you have just leap on them at the right moment otherwise they freeze for a second then go "----" think it took me five attempts this morning!! (does anyone actually know what I mean by this??). Plus they just weigh to the nearest lb and I would really like some increments.
So, who has a recommendation for some good, but not too expensive, scales? Maybe with a bodyfat function too?

Got mine from Lloyds pharmarcy, measure in 0.2 lb increments, does bmi and bodyfat, and you can set it for different people. Think A5da also does them too - they may be salter but not sure as they're not here.
  • hello all!

Are you feeling a little bit better now BB, as well as a little bit lighter?

Whoever it was said 'your head has to be in the right place to lose weight' ( I think it was Victory) is just SO right. I've put on a STONE since Christmas. I don't know where my head is but right place it isn't. :o:o That isn't for the chart Fred, I'm not ready yet.

Beanie, thank you for the card.

    welcome :j

and it will be nice to have another gezzer here, far to many cackling womin :D

you like me are in the danger age for men (suddenly drop dead from a heart attack syndrome), especially if your stomach is solid and not wobbly like a plastic bag filled with water (man, 40+ and visceral fat = DANGER)

as for the gym if your paying you want somewhere where they can evaluate your fitness give you a program to stick to and monitor your progress, this is more important than having the latest equipment imo

i think heart rate monitors are important to ensure you dont over do it especially if you have not done any physical activity for a few years, there also critical for ensuring you are exercising at an efficient level

something else thats handy in a gym is if they can accurately calculate your BMI ie they can work out how much muscle you have rather than use the standard chart which is very inaccurate, this will give you an accurate target to aim for and allow you to see if you are gaining or losing muscle as well as fat

my quick guide may be of interest to you

thats something that took me a while to understand, its a big part of the YoYo dieting syndrome as well as the fact that some foods are more than foods and trigger a hormone response which creates addictive behaviour.

Many thanks for the info--i did my bmi and i am 27,1 which slots me in the middle of fat!--the things i tend to eat or drink too much of are cheese bread and coffee---i live abroad and cheese is everyones favourite for breakfast--along with salad and olives--is it so bad early on in the day and makes for a hearty breakfast?--i know i over do the bread because it is always freshly baked and delicious from my too close bakery!-coffee i drink a lot but it doesnt give me a sweet tooth as your info says--i hardly touch sugary things apart from an odd glass of coke a couple of times a week--i can be very disciplined and my wife is on this health kick with me -but our 12yo daughter (who is thin as a rake and eats loads)might threaten the regime!
İ am thinking to get a trial at this gym as a test drive --any pointers to look out for--i scouted it during the day time and it was very quiet--but my wife saw it last night and she said it was lively but not crowded--i hate going at busy times and have loads of spare time in the working day--thats my problem inertia!--its on the way to work and close to home so i have no diversions to attending it regularly--i am a great thinker of reasons not to do things--call me Mr Negative!!--got me worried now about the sudden death syndrome so have to get to it!

what good points are there to look and ask about in a gym--apart from the price!--

Welcome to the thread de1amo! I would definitely ask them what their busiest times are at the gym and whether they have many issues with queuing for equipment, or whether classes/courts get booked up quickly (if you're interested in doing any classes). Some gyms I've noticed also crank the music up at certain times, so if you're not the 'music/television blaring' type, then this could be something to ask about. The peaceful, calm gym you visited on a Wednesday lunchtime could be quite different on a Friday evening ;).

I'd also ask whether they have any refurbs etc planned in the next year or so - it's frustrating to join a gym only to have facilities become unavailable shortly afterwards. Also perhaps ask what is their policy for illness/injury if you're unable to use the gym for any length of time?

Have you shopped around, if there are other gyms in the area it would probably be worth visiting all of them before signing up :).

Hope you enjoy your new gym once you've joined! :D Good luck with your weight loss plans. Oh snap I've just noticed your starting BMI is 27 - so was mine!

:j Well done to everyone who's posted up a good result this week :j

BB poor you :( I can tell you're feeling better today though :). Well spotted re: Seren ;) (how did you do that?!)

Granny just want to say I'm glad you're still posting here, even if you're 'on a little break' with the LW stuff.

gyms arent as numerous here as they are in the uk--the other gym i could call local is a bit further and a lot posher--i think the men wear their stomacks as badges of honour and wealth there--its called the Turkish muscle!--i dont think they are quite ready for my body or wallet lol---the gym i have in view is new and fresh -it covers a floor area of a large multi storey car park over a big store!--it has too many mirrors for my liking -most off putting!!--i dont mind a bit of loud music ocassionally as long as its not turkish!!--i am very flexible about the times i can go--i only do 16 hours over a 6 days week--so i might fit something in!-they have a policy where you can park your membership for 3 months in every 12 months-thus making it last 15months--i go away for the school holidays--back to the uk or my holiday home here so i will park it then--hopefully i will be motivated to exercise by summer time and keep going in the break!
İ did see the walking guide on the website at the beginning but this place is so hazardous for pedestrians because you find yourself walking mostly in the road because there is no parking restricions in a city of 2 million--i would prefer it to the gym!
i cant wait to get going on this quest--and feel quite positive at acheiving something--how do you set your goal weight?--i havent gained any weight in 2 years despite my total lack of exercise so i hope the only way is down.-the last time i used a gym to loose weight i hit my target in about 3 months and proceeded to put it all back on in about the same amount of time!--i was single then and had crap eating habits--vegetarism is rife here and you can eat healthily quite easily and my wife knows the receipes but i brought my western ways to her diet!!---meat and 2 veg!!
Hows your quest going from 27??

welcome de1amo; always good to have another bloke on board (cackling womin eric, cacklin women? Don't you mean stimulating intelectual female debate?:D)

Thanks granny and missy. Better than the last 2 days which have knocked me for 6. I've taken the week off work now to give myself a chance to get better properly. I do forgot how easily I am worn out sometimes, but I have to have a life and I refus to never do anything 'just in case'.

Missy - the exercise I was taking about with delly was the resolve to get back to swimming and i have written it in my diary for every thurday afternoon. However events of this week show what a difficult balancing act it can be and I can't make tomorrow anyway as boiler man coming for 3rd attempt to fix niagra falls as it wends its way through bathroom floor to kitchen.
The other thing is of course my lovely bike. I really want to get a bit bike fit and cycle along the sea front regulalry when the weather warms up a bit. I need to sort out a better saddle though I think -the one that came with the bike really was uncomfortable after 10 mins. And I need a good pump. I ought to do that soon so I am ready to go go go when spring sprungs.

Another good thing about having dellly stay is it prompted me to get some new plates and bowls: we only had 3 plates left and 2 of them were chipped and I had broken all my bowls of the perfect small portion size.
Spotted some nice plain cream ones in ^sda last week and you could get 4 plates 4 bowls and 4 mugs for £10 and the plates are a nice small size dinner plate and perfect. The colours were cream or taupe and you could mix and match as you liked. The bowls (taupe) are the perfect small size for me for a pasta meal portion. OH can have the old bigger bowls. And my mum wanted some new cheap mugs and she trusts my taste for her so it was a good buy.

Hezza - yes, you really want to avoid the slippery slope and try and get organised. If time is more pressured now, and you are earning good money, can you buy in healthy options ready made and take from home? Even if a little pricy, it may be worth it.

Seren - hows the wedding prep going?:j
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
