I am cooking a fajita salad for my dins tonight. The recipe wants me to use an Uncle B's ready cooked rice microwavable jobber, i don't like them and don't see the need to buy it when i have rice in my cupboard.

So you lovely people. How do i flavour my rice to make it more interesting? (recipe wanted a pepper one? )

I currently cook my rice using the 'Jamie Oliver' method of boiling it for 5 mins then steaming.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

And sorry in advance if there is already an exciting rice thread

This is Old Style, of course there's a rice thread! :p (merged)

we even have one for brown rice

hello, personally i love hot and spicey foods but my dad and fiancee certainly dont! i would like to cook atleast one meal a week accompanied by rice but i am a bit short of good frugal ideas. there is the obvious sweet and sour but would like a bit more variety, any ideas welcome.

How about some chicken in a creamy sauce?
I use some leftover chicken, heat it up in a pan, add some grated garlic, a tub of creme fraiche and a tablespoon of mustard. It's really yummy.
Sometimes I chuck some leftover bacon bits or leeks or mushrooms in too.

stuffed peppers/mushrooms/big tomatoes? I stuff them with leftover rice, peas (or any other veg I have around), onions, garlic and cook for about 20mins

ChocClares chicken recipe goes well with rice.

    Chinese Chicken

    In a casserole dish, place
    6 tblsps wine
    3 tblsps soy sauce
    1 tblsp water
    1 tblsp sugar
    1 tsp made mustard

Mix round to stir. Put your chicken thighs in the dish and zhuzh round so they get covered in the sauce. Bung in the oven on about gas 5 for...um.... not sure - an hour? I judge it by when it starts to smell nice ;). Remove the lid from the casserole and return to the oven for a further 20-30 mins until skin is crispy and brown. This is a dish which benefits from cooking until the meat falls off the bone, as nothing is more bleurch than a scarcely-cooked chicken thigh!

This is delicious and makes a LOT of gravy - more than you'd think for the amount of liquid you start with. It also freezes and reheats beautifully - in fact, it tastes better the next day (this also allows you to let it go cold and take off any extra fat). Serve with mash to soak up the gravy, or rice.

I too like rice and often have some instead of potato's with sausages ect.
  • You could just cook chillis and curries; put the mild spices in for them - serve up and then add the chili as it's the chili that adds the heat.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I'd call off the wedding with a man who doesnt like spicey food! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Short of that, stroganoffs (beef or mushroom) and just about any protein that you'd usually serve on bread or with chips. How about latin style beans and rice, maybe served with chicken?
