I save 1ps, 2ps and 5ps because they weigh a ton and I never find a use for them. Then turn them into the bank £1 at a time and when I have £10 it goes into my ISA

now that the nutella is only a distant memory, i save all my coppers in theer and asked husband to do the same
his wallets burst anyway and have to get new ones often, as he tends to spend notes rather than coins, thinking they will come useful
anyway my jar is big but agter a fortninght (about) i've got quite a few pieces in there!

I have a coffee jar that keeps anything under 50p, all bagged up with a note in each saying how I am doing towards the required amount to bank. As soon as I get there I deposit it into my savings account which goes to paying off the credit cards! It was just a big jar of coins a while ago, but I went to the bank for bags figuring I must have loads in there I could pay in, and it seemed almost every bag was about 10 short! I wasn't going to count them all again, hence the notes...

I never put coins in jar any more and I no longer accumulate bucket loads of change. I manage to get rid of all change in cash transactions with retailers because I don't put it in a container. Put your change in a transparent plastic bag and you can prepare to count out the right amount as you queue up to pay. This does require some existing mental arithmetic capability that is also stimulated by the excercise. The more you do it the faster you get. You can use a small change collection to avoid collecting any more small change with some preparation.

  • I've got a change jar too but I only ever put something in it when my purse is really too full (never often these days)

However, I have started taking out any 10p pieces left in there at the end of each day and adding them to my 10p piece collection (see my siggy). I'm not sure what I'm saving up for exactly, but I'm sure I'll appreciate it when I need it :)

  • I collect £2 coins (have £12 so far) and a big (empty) Martini bottle half full of 5p's - I think it will hold about £90. These are 'my' savings towards a trip to New York again - the children get all the 1's, 2's, 10's and 20's saved up over the year, at Christmas to put in their savings, and the 50p's and £1's go towards credit cards or odd pints of milk etc!!

i dont often get change. i spend mainly on switch cards, and the odds that are left in the account come payday get transferred to my savings account and added to the cash for paying off debt. but what i do get goes into a banky and gets raided when i need a pint of milk or something small like that.

my stepdad used to stick all his coins into a giant whisky bottle, then bribe me into counting it for him. he'd end up with a couple of hundred out of it and he'd give me £20 or so for doing it.

I chuck all my small change in a demijohn and every few months bag it and bank it into my change/ebay/amazon/bootsale seperate account. Been doing this for 18-24 months now and we have just passed the £1000 amount.

To me it is worth the effort as that cash would have been whittled away elsewhere. We are saving for a holiday in the next year or so. :j
