  • Just wondered if anyone could help me.

My mum saves her jars for me to use for keeping my HM jam in, although at the moment she seems to have a taste for very spicy garlicky sauces which even after several washes, leaves smelly jars.

If anyone knows how to get rid of the smell so taste of jam won't be impaired I'd really appreciate it !!

    Thanks :T
  • Try putting 1 tsp baking powder in each jar and topping up with warm water, leave to stand for a while - at least 10 minutes, then empty out and rinse with clean cold water. Seems to work for smelly flasks so hopefully will work on the jars.

You'll also need to do the same with the lids. The plastic in them can often pick up smells of the contents too.

  • You could also try Milton sterilising fluid or similar tablets from the chemist to see if that helps??

I use bicarbonate of soda and warm water. Basically the same as baking powder but a little cheaper.
If the above suggestions don't work try a wine and beer making sterilising product. Can be found in some supermarkets (Morrisons) and most health food shops.

  • I use the sterilising powder I buy for my wine making.

Sometimes they are OK if you put them in the dishwasher on quite a high wash, lids as well. If you use them straight away after wards I would imagine they are quite sterile too.
  • Denture cleaning tablets are worth a go - I use them for old stained china

hope this is in the right place.

What can I use instead of jam jars to store jam in?

Any ideas for a cheap supplier of glass jars are other?

Have decided to make jam after a trial run last night.

Ask neighbours if they have any, first. Many people keep them "just in case" but don't actually use them. Or they keep them for recycling, but don't get around to it!

If you must buy them, the cheapest source I found last year was Ascott. Note that the prices are not "per jar" - you need to click on the jar to see the quantity you get for the price.
