Can I ask a jam making question too?!

I'm 18, and I've decided I want to try making jam. I've found a recipe, and all sounds simple. And then I have to pour the hot jam into warm jars.

So what is the best way to warm the jars?
And then what do I cover them with?
And where can I buy pectin?
And what's the easiest jam to start with?

I think that's all my questions for now, any help welcome!

Either put the jars in warm water or in a low oven.

If you put a screw top lid on straight away you don't need to cover them as it self-seals.

What complicated recipe are you using that needs pectin, lol ;D

Strawberry!! - One pound strawbs, juice one lemon, 7oz sugar (this is low sugar recipe). Slightly cook strawbs with juice. Put into big microwaveable bowl with sugar. Cook on full power for about 6-7 mins then stir. Continue to cook and stir every couple of mins after that. Should be done after about 20 mins. Test by putting some on a plate and running a spoon through. It's done if it stays 'wrinkled'.

Don't worry too much about sealing the jar anyway cos it you make just one batch at a time you eat it really quickly!! ;D

just make sure that the jars are completely sterelised or youll get mouldy jam fast

pecitn can be bought where you buy lemon juice in the supermarket its in the same type of bottle

but lemon juice does the job

Oh yes, most bread makers seem to have a jam making program.

One of our local coffee shops serves homemade rhubarb and orange jam with scones. The owner only makes it in May as she says that for the recipe she uses that's when the rhubarb is perfect. She told me that it cames from Gloria Hunniford's nanny - how true that is, I don't know but it tastes wonderful!

Do remember that reusing an item such as a jamjar is much better than recycling and if you put them through the dishwasher they are sterilised.

I don't know nuffin about making jam but AFAIK a dishwasher dininfects but doesn't sterilise, you would need to boil or steam to sterilise.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
