  • Have lived myself in E Kent since 2003 so here's what I think :

    - If I were looking for a commutable town in North Kent I would choose Faversham. Good housing stock, easy access to both Canterbury and Maidstone, local trains to London. Has some interesting local festivals.

    - Socially, the best place to live in E Kent is Canterbury. Big student population but still beautiful old cathedral town. I never tire of the beauty of the place when I visit in the evenings. High speed link to London. More expensive than other locations, but relative if you are coming from anywhere else in the South East!

    - Another option for commuting is Folkestone. Old Victorian seaside resort so some nice houses, including ones round garden squares. 3/4 bed houses near Folkestone West 160-180K. High speed link to London. Bit more genteel than say Margate due presence Saga/de Haan Foundation.

(I live in Folkestone, so take this as you like!!)

    - If I wasnt working I would also consider Deal. Lovely old high street, olde worlde feel near seafront. Some lovely property due to its importance to the Georgian/Victorian Royal Navy. Downside : Transport to London sucks.

    Otherwise :

Maidstone is the local county centre, but let me tell you, its housing sucks (in the centre at least). Lots of rowdies in the city centre at the weekend.

Ashford has "new town" written all over it - compared to other towns in E Kent, has no quaintness or charm. Still, lots of new housing stock is available there :)

And no, I wouldnt live in Margate either!! (for many of the reasons listed)

Folkestone isn't bad but does it still have the chavs who insist on driving round the town at night at high speed in cars with stupid sound systems and even stupider exhausts?
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Brighton was in the dumps 20 years ago. When we opened there in 98, it was ticking over and bubbling up but wasn't anything like as busy as now.

Brighton was in the dumps 30 years ago too. It was a very scarey place. I worked there for 7 months in 1978, putting in a computer system and lived in a big hotel on the sea front. I remember Brighton for the two Ss; stabbings and stones (beach). We were very glad when the 7 months was up.

Margate use to be a family friendly place in the 60s and 70s. A beautiful sandy beach, donkey rides and Dreamland.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I've been to both and Margate is a lot more hardcore than Hastings...but it has this gorgeous, long and lovely sandy beach.

But SC, the West pier burnt down too......just as the lotto funding was okayed....:o
