Why is property in margate so cheap to buy?

Haha this thread made me laugh.. Not been there have you?!
West Kent is super-commutable, and there are some bargains to be had in some parts (i.e. not sevenoaks) although not to the tune of £20k! But you save a lot of time and it's a much nicer part of the world.0 -
Look the other side of Canterbury. Folkestone is about 20 mins from Ashford, so it's literally on one, off one, then onto the high speed link. It's got links to Paris, Brussels, Lille through the Eurostar (again Ashford) and it's got the Channel Tunnel. There's also some lovely little villages between Folkestone and Canterbury which are an easier distance to travel (can either commute from Folkestone or Canterbury but if you want to avoid the traffic and the students go through Folkestone)
An hour from London by car, has got SAGA so it's always a good bet for jobs if needs be.
(I used to live in Hawkinge, which is still lovely if a bit overdeveloped. But the village schools are some of the best in the area - the waiting list at one is 3 years)** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

The beaches look lovely, there is good access to main stream shops in the shopping centre and individual shops in the towns. We are semi retired so not so worried about work - would just like part time jobs. House prices are reasonable and there is some hope of improvement in the area - Ramsgate is already much improved and was tipped as a property hot spot ages ago for when the fast train service arrives and Margate has the Turner gallery under construction and will be trying to improve.
We have chosen this area over North Devon where we are renting now because it will be drier (it seems to have rained constantly in N Devon since we moved here) it is easier to get to places - via Gatwick Heathrow and Dover and it is closer to our family. Lots happens in the summer months - and Broadstairs is a quaint old place
Will let you know in a year or so if it was a mistake!
good for you, we're just down the road. i cycled with the dog yesterday from botany bay to margate, the sea was so blue, it was lovely0 -
Hi
I like the way the Turner Gallery blends in seamlessly with it's Victorian surroundings.
You wouldn't know it was there unless somebody pointed it out!
Except for the crane .
If the Turner planning process is anything to go by the Dreamland project might be up and running in ... oh 10 years?
There does seem to be a good trade in matches and accelerant .
It's rise from the ashes will long and drawn out.
Margate has the worst vacant High Street shop count in the South East at least.
Broadstairs is very much the rose between two thorns.

i used to think ramsgate was no good either, but ive had to change my mind since moving down this way. it really is becoming cleaned up, gentrified, nice cafes etc
unless you live in sloane square theres always going to be downsides to a place
you're right about the turner though, what a mess and pointless0 -

Personally, I think the Turner Gallery is going to be great..but not at the beginning....give it 7-8 years from the actual opening. Bit like the Dome in Greenwich.....as the 02 Centre it is kicking A$$ yet loads of people wrote it off after the 2000 opening. Problem with The Dome was it was run by very well meaning public sector employees who overpaid massively on nearly everything that went into it...it was pretty amazing though.
I would love Margate to bumble along the bottom for a while so I can catch up and buy something like this. Oooops looks like it's been withdrawn.0 -
I grew up in Manston, near Ramsgate. My first ever job was a ride operator in Dreamland."It's official, MSE's harbouring total fruitcakes">^..^<0

the problem with it, wont be the place itself, but the fact of where it is. if margate is going to pick up, it needs to present itself as a clean, fun, bucket and spade place with lots of child friendly, family focused places to eat, shop, rest and play
the turner centre is a bit of a posh thing to my mind, sat in the middle of a town where there are tatty boarded up shop fronts, nasty 70s arcades, a seedy feel and greasy spoons
the fact that dreamland is shut does not help, if it was a fun theme family activity place, it would get families thinking theres a point to margate then the shops would cater for them etc, but until then, i really cannot see that the glitterati are going to come far and wide to see some modern fart and whilst checking that their bag hasnt been swiped by a drunk chav0 -

You should have been on the Apprentice when both teams had the task of trying to rebrand Margate. Howard's team tried to project it as a gay-scene.
The entire episode is on YouTube.

Apprentice voice: Once a Kent coast gem, today just another faded seaside town.
Lorraine: I just love these buildings.
Ben: The ones that aren't boarded up are quite nice yeah.0
