It's not all doom and gloom in Margate http://www.turnercontemporary.org/about/?p=26.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

If moving to Kent, the other thing to consider is the day when you have had enough of commuting, and need to find a local job. Although the rail links in Maidstone are terrible, the town does tend to be the base for any national company wanting a Kent base. It also has KCC and a local council offices. This is in contrast to Ashford which has attracted houses and the rail link, but very few well paid jobs.Been away for a while.0

As everyone said the commute to/from Margate is that great, it will take you a minimum of 2 hours each way providing the trains run on time and you are not too far from the station.
Driving is not a better option as the A2/M2 constantly have roadworks and A2 is congested at rush hour.
You also have to consider that living in Margate is a risk in the winter as you may be cut off from the rest of the country due to poor weather. I found myself in that situation last month when I visited a friend in Ramsgate. You couldn't drive out of Thanet due to heavy snowfall, black ice and accidents all along the A299. I had to stay the night there and missed the next morning at work.
However, the day there is fast train from Margate/Ramsgate I am moving there as it's such a beautiful area. I love Broadstairs. I will be spending a lot of weekends there this summer.

dont forget to collect your copy of busy broadstairs to know whats on when, dont forget the folk festival, the dickens festival and the various craft markets ( you might have guessed that i live there!)0

Sorry to put a dampener on all the pro-Margate people on here, but I think it's quite clear why it's so cheap to live there.
When I was a kid I used to go to Ramsgate/Margate/Broadstairs/Reculver on holiday and had a great time, but recently I had the chance to revisit and wishes I hadn't...what a sorry place...not the town I used to love as a child.
The town centre appears full of charity shops, bookmakers and pound stores, with most other shops boarded up or closing down. The seafront is run down, with the Dreamland park now burned down. It's remote...and business appears to have deserted the town now that cheap flights allow people to holiday overseas.
I'm sure Margate does have some good qualities, but Thanet and the neigbouring areas are becoming increasingly deprived as tourism fades - the town is pretty grotty and just not very nice at all.
That said, I'm not being rude for the sake of it - I used to love Margate and wish things would turn around, but it's just another example of a seaside town going to ruin.0 -

I found the fire pics. Here it is going on, in 2009. http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/news/2009/july/2/dramatic_pictures_of_inferno.aspx
Ah, it was arson/murder. Two 18-year old boys died in there. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/3502054.stm
I think that is wrong, the arson/murder took place on Setterfield Road, July 2003
The £20k house is in Grosvenor Place and the fire was in June 2009
Correct me if I'm wrongI love giving home made gifts, which one of my children would you like?:A

you're right, i dont think anyone here is arguing that margate is ok at the moment, but lots of us dont want the view of margate to put people off thanet as a whole, there is more to thanet that just margate but the problem is it has such a bad reputation for tattyness and being not looked after that it has tainted the rest of the area.
pick a nice day and come to broadstairs and ramsgate, you wont be disappointed0 -
My friend has just moved from Margate to Ramsgate so I will be spending a lot of time on the beach this summer + Ramsgate has a lovely harbour which reminds me of Brittany.
Oh and not to forget that wondeful Belgian bar :beer:0 -
I am currently on assignment in Canterbury and rent digs in Herne Bay. FWIW this is what I have picked up about Kent property:
- Canterbury: agreed very expensive for the large houses, crawling with studenst which makes it great if you want extra income from lodgers
- commuting : my fellow lodger in Herne Bay works in central London. She leaves the house at 7:10 am to walk to Herne Bay station and returns home from London around 8:30pm. I met a couple who live in Hersden (approx 1/3 of the way between Canterbury and Margate), they both use the coach to get to London due to cost but acknowledge that they wil be held up regularly on the road
- Whitstable: in Kent terms this has now "arrived" as its "full" of Londoners who have pushed prices up in anticipation of the extension of the high speed line. Places further east, such as Herne Bay, are (allegedly) on the cusp of booming as well. That said, compared to my home in Surrey I can still buy buy 5 - 7 beds down here for the price of a modest 4 bed in Surrey
- my LL's ex lives in Ramsgate and does not have anything nice to say about Margate
- local employment pay rates are the pits compared to London and there are only 2 big employers in East Kent: the universities in Canterbury and Psizer in Sandwich, if either make cut backs, people have few alternatives. One LL I talked to lives in a village south of Canterbury and when she lost her job she now has to commute (by car) to Maidstone. about 1/3 of the people in my street in Herne Bay commute to London
summary E Kent generally - really nice part of the world to live, can feel cut off, pace of live noticeably slower than rest of South East0
