Why is property in margate so cheap to buy?

Last time we went to Margate, I didn't even get out of the car it was so bad.
Over the years, we've often gone down there - the beach really stinks these days (of detritus), litter everywhere, places closed down and there is absolutely NOTHING to do there these days.
It's criminal really. We grew up visiting there in the 70s - it was going downhill back then, but seriously, the council and locals should be ashamed of what they've allowed their town to become. I certainly wouldn't be in a rush to join them."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

If they haven't go the funding, they can't improve the area... sadly0 -

That would be great, Margate needs something like that to attrack kids and their parents to the area.
If only they got rid of these arcades along the beach. Imagine what the place would be like if you had nice coffee shops/food places along the sea front. Okay, they wouldn't do well in winter but it would be a plus to the town in summer.0 -

If you want to be near the seaside then see what you can afford in Whitstable. If cheap proximity to London is important then look at Medway (Rochester being the best of a bad bunch). Personally, I would have chosen Faversham for a small market town, but didn't get a job nearby. Canterbury is overpriced and full of students. If you want a village near a train station then search Rightmove within a mile of Longfield, Farningham Road, Higham, Lenham, and Staplehurst. No doubt there are many others to choose from.
The medway towns are horrible. If Kent is the garden of england, then the medway towns are that bit of the garden where you dump all your rubbish!0 -
I mentioned it as being cheap and commutable for London, with a suggestion for where to start looking. No doubt you can suggest something better and affordable?Been away for a while.0

South East Essex near Southend to London Liverpool Street or Fenchurch Street railway line links.
Much closer to central London and coastal prices in certain areas are probably comparable to areas like Ramsgate (probably not as cheap as Margate admittedly)0 -
We moved this way two years ago and now live in Broadstairs. We were in a nice part of Brighton beforehand and don't miss it. My son turns two next month. We have a reasonable house and garden. He can go outside when he wants to. We have beaches, parks etc. At the risk of sounding like a tourist rep we love it down here. Broadstairs is great, parts of Margate are improving. What we lack is a definable industry to provide jobs and lift the area out of its depressed state. I can afford my mortgage, give my son a good start and put some money in the bank. Having worked and commuted to London, I really do prefer my new life. And besides, there isn't a single bloody starbucks anywhere near here.0

We are buying in Kingsgate in Broadstairs next month. We would have bought a property in Westbrook but couldn't agree a price. The beaches look lovely, there is good access to main stream shops in the shopping centre and individual shops in the towns. We are semi retired so not so worried about work - would just like part time jobs. House prices are reasonable and there is some hope of improvement in the area - Ramsgate is already much improved and was tipped as a property hot spot ages ago for when the fast train service arrives and Margate has the Turner gallery under construction and will be trying to improve.
We have chosen this area over North Devon where we are renting now because it will be drier (it seems to have rained constantly in N Devon since we moved here) it is easier to get to places - via Gatwick Heathrow and Dover and it is closer to our family. Lots happens in the summer months - and Broadstairs is a quaint old place
Will let you know in a year or so if it was a mistake!Downshifted
