Unless the property and your work office is right next to the stations, you are looking at spending 4 hours a day commuting, plus presumably quite a few hundred pounds on the fares, too.0 -
It's fine to commute, done it myself, you can get the high speed link from Canterbury West no prob's at all.
Although Margate aint great nearby Broadstairs is if you can afford to spend a bit more0 -

The quickest commute from Margate to Central London takes 1hr 31 minutes.
And that is presuming the trains run on time.
So on a good day you would be spending 3 hours commuting and that's not including travel to the station on both sides of your journey.
Also if you lost that job, and had to commute somewhere else in London or the South East how easy would it be to get there?
One of the reasons property prices vary in different parts of the SE is the transport links.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
Because theres no jobs and its a dump?
Hey....I grew up near there!! Whilst it is not as lovely as it used to be due to the retail parks driving all the business out, it's not that bad. I can think of many worse places to live. It has a decent train station with links to London. The houses are a good size for a reasonable price, and you are close to both the beach and the countryside. To the OP I would say check it out before you knock. It may not be your cup of tea, but then you may get a bargain, wont know until you look0 -

Yes but the high speed rail link costs a prince's ransom and then you have to drive to Canterbury West and pay for parking.
If you can afford all of that, why not just buy a house somewhere closer to London that isnt such a depressing hole,Mortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0 -
If you're looking for cheap and not too upmarket in Kent then consider Sittingbourne. Lots of ugly new builds keep the prices low. If you want to be near the seaside then see what you can afford in Whitstable. If cheap proximity to London is important then look at Medway (Rochester being the best of a bad bunch). Personally, I would have chosen Faversham for a small market town, but didn't get a job nearby. Canterbury is overpriced and full of students. If you want a village near a train station then search Rightmove within a mile of Longfield, Farningham Road, Higham, Lenham, and Staplehurst. No doubt there are many others to choose from.Been away for a while.0

look at property just either side of margate (cliftonville and wesbrook) and you're looking at much nicer areas and nearly as cheap, then move a bit further away (westgate and broadstairs, then birchington and ramsgate) and your money wont go as far but the areas improve vastly
but the commuting will be an issue, my partner spends about 6 hours a day give or take commuting, he has to change trains and this all adds time, then tere are delays and the journey to and from the station
on the plus side the thanet is beautiful, we were cycling at minnis bay yesterday and today was at herne bay (just outside thanet), the beaches are lovely, sandy and wide and clean0 -

Canterbury West is on the train route and wasn't suggesting driving, but I do agree, the high speed link is v expensive at the moment0 -

Agreed completely. I grew up in Westgate. It's a lovely area0
