WHat do you people DO when you are washing dishes that you need boots  (I do have a dishwasher though...)
since this thread appeared I have got into the habit of always wearing an apron when cooking, and it has saved me a load of clothing stains already :)
I have a baileys freebie and also the marmite one I had whenI was at middle school!

    What an interesting thread.

Thinking back my nanan always used to wear a pinny or an apron. I've never thought of wearing one until now.

But I do have specific clothes for housework. Then again, if I had a pinny/apron I wouldn't need extra clothes. Hmmmmmmm  , one to think about. ;)

My mum had an old 1950s book on pregnancy and babycare and it said you MUST have a rubber apron for when you are bathing the baby.
I should have thought of this when DS was smaller I had to cover him in greasy stuff for his eczema, I used to keep a spare set of clothes just for that, as anything I wore got covered in grease spots. An apron would have been just the thing!

I love that one, never seen that style before.

    Tiff, where have you been?!;)
That is the standard British housewives apron......as worn by just about everyone in our street unless they had a wraparound.........Mmm, my age is showing again me thinks.

Some of the girls here in Portugal use an long oversized tabard, but they tie it front & back not at the sides, so that the front overlaps the back.

I was reminded of this when watching 'Volver', a lovely Spanish film that won 'Best Foreign Film' somewhere. (My husband wanted the dvd because Penelope Cruz is in it;...he almost fainted seeing her in a pinny:D )

    Here is a still:-1854902966_04e2ab230e_o.jpg

It's the one on the right obviously..One of my young neighbours in Milan with 3 children wore some like this, they came well below her knees. Lots of frills I seem to recall....looked lovely too.

It depends on the style, obviously, but I definitely wouldn't consider aprons in general to be female clothing. If you're really worried about preserving your masculinity then go for a plain apron or one with butcher-style stripes. Otherwise just stay clear of anything that is pink, frilly or flowery and you should be OK

I used to have a green-and-white striped PVC apron, but it wore out (does anyone else find that they wear at the waist?). I've been unable to find similar. Any ideas? eBay hasn't been particularly useful.
  • Just to show that some young folk don't mind going oldfashioned, here is my Czech neighbour in one of my aprons (It's too small for me these days, so maybe I should try to sell it on ebay?). My husband thought she looked irresistible...hence the pics!
I think bib aprons without a harness are bad for posture as they always pull the neck, & never fit right anyway.....+ I fall out of them as they twist around! - maybe that's just me?:D

that great, I'd love one like that. I've just got a baileys one at the moment but always wear it when cooking. For some reason it gives me more confidence and I'm sure I get better results somehow :D

I have one of those 'waist down' ones - i like wearing that with nothing else - we dont get much cooking done.

You wondered why I wear rubber boots when washing the dishes or doing other housework with water.

I can tell you. When I was about 18, I worked as a college dishwasher. At work, I had to wear an apron, rubber gloves (up to my elbows), rubber boots and a baseball cap. I do not work at that college anymore, but I still wear boots and baseball cap when washing the dishes.

I don't wear an apron for anything, though I do wear old clothes for cleaning or for messy cooking/eating. However, we have just moved into a house over four floors and after doing the cleaning today, I think it might be best to clean naked, so as not to get so hot!
