That's what we have..looking at new tv's last night too showed most of them are like this now.0 -
What's with all this "dd's dh's,? there are enough bl**dy abbreviations and acronyms already, let type what we want to say in full, or this just another americanism creeping in, like saying "hey" instead of "Hello":mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:0

Yes, why? Do you have a problem with my reply?0

I put my computers into Sleep mode at home. For me, it's the best compromise between being quick into a usable desktop and reducing the power consumption.0

Hi yes new tv's do go to standby from the remote..if we turned it off at the wall we woudln't get any of our downloads..call me lazy if you want but im not it's just the fact that the tv's are now like this.
I do appreciate the environment and most things in our house are thought of and turned off but not the tv ( as we can't in a way) or the pc..as for the argument of it lasting longer my op stated that our last one went for 5+ years without a hitch..best pc we have ever bought tbh and fab!
But wouldn't you get your downloads when you turned it back on or are they set at defined times during the night?
If you leave your TV on I assume the rest (dvd, sky/freeview/, surround sound) is also left on?0 -
I always find the when you switch the boxes back on in the morning, the downloads happen automatically then.0

The only thing that gets left on in my house is the,
Sky+ box - For recordings
Fridge Freezer - for obvious reasons
Router - Mainly stays on, only gets switched off if not going to be used for a few days.0 -
I'll just add one point not raised so far: Security patches.
Some of these NEED a rebooot to apply, we got into problems where I work with:
Some PCs running 24/7 never rebooted
PC misses security patches because it's never rebooted
PC catches viruses/malware due to being unpatched
PC collapses and needs rebuilding
We now make sure all PCs are (soft) rebooted every 3 days or so minimum
Sorry about this, I know this is a consideration to think of however I was talking specifics mainly regarding the environment as opposed to O/S stability since that seemed to be the hotpoint of the topic (concerning power consumption).
It's always best to reboot the servers to apply security patches. I'm trying to research clusters for my business anyway as I can't afford downtime of outages during reboots. Relatively new territory to meOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them
