Shutting down also can save work, reset connections (as would shutting down routers and modems).

Not too sure about shutting down a router - I'd be worried that I could end up being dumped onto a higher noise margin. It's taken ages for my margin to get reduced from 15db to 12db and I'm sure if I kept shutting down my router they might increase my margin again.

I have 3 computers in my bedroom (Main PC, Webserver, Media Centre PC)

The only one that really gets left on is the Main PC for when I'm doing stuff in a computer game. Providing the PC is looked after there is no harm in leaving it on 24/7 as long as you keep it's protection with regular windows updates

I suspect the problem lies with maintenance. I regularly forget to clean my PC and you wouldn't believe how much dust builds up in them.... I do enjoy leaving my PC's on when I'm using them all, they keep my bedroom at a comfortable 25c as opposed to 19c in the rest of the house :D

I always recommend off completely as 'sleeping/hybernating' means any microsoft updates might never be able to install themselves properly which is why you might be having the issues you are

Like most people have said on here we also turn almost everything off at night, routers, modems, computer everything.

The only thing in our house that is on 24/7 is the cable box, fridge freezer, alarm clocks thats it.

During the day, when I am using the computer, I have it set to hibernate after 30 minutes of no activity, ot I hibernate it manually, but when I have finished with it at night, everything is switched off at the mains switch including modems and routers.

I always switch my cable boxes off if not recording because the light it so bright, it lights up the whole room:eek:

    Dust and heat!!!
Most household fires are due to electrical faults and because of that all plugs should be pulled out.
  • I repair PCs and in my experience if you keep turning off the pc at the mains socket you will shorten the life of the Power supply in the pc
From "cold" there is a surge in the PSU to start it up (this applies to all modern electronic devices with SMPS eg TVs etc)
because the components in the PSU are so cheap nowerdays, the capacitors normaly pop after a couple of years now
In standby/hibernate it will consume very little power 5W
If the machine takes so long to boot up sounds like some software issue??
it should boot in under a minute

    Ignorance is bliss ;)

I frequently clean my bedroom so there's as little dust as possible
