I've never timed my pc startup and have no intention on changing that.

It can provide a good reference point when trying to resolve slow boot-up issues to see how bad the problem is. Also comes in handy to test the effect of certain software loading during boot-up (AV progs etc), among other things.

    I'm even more depressed now

My concept of time is crap.

Actually takes 1min5 secs to get to the logon screen

I do however think it's about 40 secs, because I think the IDE Controller on my M/B is knackered as my PC unexplicably reboots on boot up sometimes. Can't really be bothered to fix it as it happens every now and then and I'm rebuilding all my PC's to high specs at some stage anyway. I've been meaning to try out a Core i7 extrme build for a while now

That's more like it:D I was expecting you to come back claiming 'it only took 15 seconds':rotfl:.

Here's an example of a high end PC with a SSD and a i7 processor doing a full boot and executing applications on Wins 7 and it takes around 21 seconds.

Obviously your handicapped PC already out does this:p:D

Anyway that's enough of me talking about Boot-up times on Windows.

I know someone who has a LG Plasma, No off switch, just goes into standby and had to be turned off at the mains.

My Sony LCD does have an off switch though.

laptop of at night sometimes, if I remember...

CCTV server on 24/7, in a rack mount case inside a rack, along with switch, also on all the time, as is the router.

i would say 99.9% of TVs are going into standby mode, not off, most have a dedicated standby circuit and over the years there power consumption has been slashed

my sony CRT used 18 watts in standby, my plasma uses 0.12 watts in standby and there reducing this further

if you want it off the wall plug has the power !!

Realistically speaking in an environment where you use them 24/7. If you need them on all the time, providing you can maintain a stable environment such as clean 3 phase power, clean air filtration and constant cooling. You can leave them on as long as you wanted because there are clean voltages, clean air and cool air going to them. Temperature is one of the main killers of servers and PCs.

I'll just add one point not raised so far: Security patches.

Some of these NEED a rebooot to apply, we got into problems where I work with:

Some PCs running 24/7 never rebooted
PC misses security patches because it's never rebooted
PC catches viruses/malware due to being unpatched
    PC collapses and needs rebuilding

We now make sure all PCs are (soft) rebooted every 3 days or so minimum :)

    So does my LG 32"

So lots of new TVs don't have off/on switches on them they just go into standby from the remote?

Does that also mean that dvd players, sky, freeview, surround sound et all all get left in standby as well?

Can't people be arised to turn off electrical equipment at the sockets these days, gosh! imagine what life would be like if everyones remote control was taken away, having to get up and psychically change your channels on your tv every 5 seconds  ;) ........I use one of those adaptors that your equipments plugs into and if you turn one item off it also turns all the other connected items off at the same time.

As for routers we turn ours off at night and back on again in the morning, bit different if you do have a server which needs to be on 24/7 though.
Turning it off at night does not affect your IP Profile its only if you keep turning it on/off within a short space of time that problems occur.

It's not just the issue of saving money and doing your bit for the environment by turning electrical equipment off but also the safety aspect, obviously there is more of a chance of faults developing if you do leave your equipment left on 24/7 than turning it off.

I just wonder how many people bother to unplug their tv aerials/dish or phone line connection to their PCs/routers when they have a lighting storm in their area or don't they bother and just rely on home contents insurance?

    Hi thanks.

Ok i no i am wrong in keeping it on but it does cope much better on and not off..being a complete techno phobe with certain things pc's are one of them..the virus software and updates etc i always leave dh to do..usually this is fine and requires it to be re started and not switched off so not really a prob there..it is just if we turn it off because dh wants to.
Yesterday there seemed to be a prob with our user pages, dd has one and so does dh and it wouldnt return from dd's to dh's without a balck screen coming up? he switched it off and it came on ok but he says it's tempremental. (I have my own laptop due to this being a prob so let them get one with it!)

Like i said i am not blase about the electric but find that for sanity and time it is far far easier to leave it on, everything else we are very good with. The tv is yes on standby (LG), if we turned it off at the wall we wouldnt get any of ourdwonlads we pay for so fugure this is a no go..also assuming it has been built for it to be ok?

    Thanks x

Hi yes new tv's do go to standby from the remote..if we turned it off at the wall we woudln't get any of our downloads..call me lazy if you want but im not it's just the fact that the tv's are now like this.

I do appreciate the environment and most things in our house are thought of and turned off but not the tv ( as we can't in a way) or the pc..as for the argument of it lasting longer my op stated that our last one went for 5+ years without a hitch..best pc we have ever bought tbh and fab!
