my pc already takes 10+ seconds for the bootloader to give me a chance to select xp/7/linux (or default to XP) tbh i switch it on when i need it, make a brew and its waiting to log in by the time i get back, ive never timed my pc startup and have no intention on changing that.

    I'm even more depressed now

My concept of time is crap.

Actually takes 1min5 secs to get to the logon screen

I do however think it's about 40 secs, because I think the IDE Controller on my M/B is knackered as my PC unexplicably reboots on boot up sometimes. Can't really be bothered to fix it as it happens every now and then and I'm rebuilding all my PC's to high specs at some stage anyway. I've been meaning to try out a Core i7 extrme build for a while now

I frequently clean my bedroom so there's as little dust as possible
The dust is in your computer, you said, along with hot electrical components....not a good recipe for safety.

As for what else you do in your bedroom I'm very happy to be blissfully ignorant

Neither is pouring a kettle without switching it off, but I bet loads of people still do that.

Had the PC for 7 years and no fires as yet ;)

I do maintenace on it all the time anyway so I'm not worried. To be honest my PC is normally left on a lot now, because the fans drone on and it narks the hell out of me when I'm trying to sleep anyway. So they get switched off quite often. Onlyl times they're on 24/7 is when I'm downloading, editing or merchanting

we have large numbers of machines and servers on 24/7 and they are more reliable than the ones that go off after 9-5 (identical kit), one of our novell servers had been up for 7 years before it was decommissioned :D

I always put it down to thermal stress

big elec bill for leaving them on thou ..

Yeah but when you got large machines, they usually have air con filtration and cooling. I been thinking about putting aircon in my bedroom at some stage, but sod that I'm colocating my servers this year anyway :)

I remember Novell, was a pain in the bum to administrate.

It's not really thermal stress, more de-stress from when you're angry ;)

Hi thanks for the replies..hmm mixed reviews but as i guessed most of you turn them off. Without sounding like a money waster the electric issue has never really crossed my mind tbh as really dont think it makes that much difference..our tv is always on standby as new tv's cant be turned off so whats the difference of a pc on standby? my point was though IF we turn it off fully it is a nightmare so why not just leave it on? if there is something wrong with it starting up fine but if it doesnt need to be why make hard work! our last one lasted about 5 years on so can't see it being a prob?

Oh and DDoris no i hadn't f****d off was just buisy that's all!!

    Thanks for the replies
