chrimbo is a coming and mr angchris wants to buy me an ice cream maker as he always picks up the expensive creamy tubs from the shops and i really begrudge paying out £3/£4 a tub when i could make several meals out of that
he will not eat the 99p tubs that im happyish buying although the quality isnt great and we always grumble at each other in the freezer section of the supermarket :rotfl:
i`d rather get a more expensive model with the freezer bit built in and have ice cream in 30 mins rather than flaffing about freezing bowls overnight.
do any of you have experience of ice cream makers and any recommendations?
thanks in advance ...angchrisproper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat moneyquote from an american indian.0 -
Hi.
I have the gaggia gelateria and it has the built in freezer and I can have ice cream in half an hour - it rarely takes that, though. It just depends on how much you put in. I love it and it is on a lot in my house. It makes an easy pudding and I can put it on when I'm putting dinner out and it's ready for pudding.
This is the only ice cream maker I have tried and the price may be prohibitive for some but I use mine constantly. I didn't pay the full retail price, though. I used kelkoo and pricerunner and got it as cheap as was possible at the time.
It is very expensive, but for me it is worth it. However, I have spoiled myself as before I was happy eating the value ice cream and now that I've had a taste of the good stuff (lol) I can't go back to eating thee cheap stuff. You need to work out if you will save enough by buying it to justify buying the maker.

I have a Magimix Le Glacier. It is fairly basic, but does make fab ice cream...although I suppose like everything, it depends upon the ingredients.
The bowl lives in the freezer, I have a chest freezer and have enough room to keep it in there, you can always put things inside the bowl, so it does not take up too much room.
Maybe try with a cheapie model such as this one and then maybe invest in a more all singing/dancing one.
I don't know how much they are on e-bay, but if you keep the box etc, there is always the option of selling it if you upgrade.

I have the Phillips Delizia, £35 in Lakeland.

It has a disc to go in the freezer which is much smaller than a bowl but works as well as the frozen bowl varieties that my friends have. I keep the bowl in my freezer pretty much all of the time as there is always a bit of room spare for this.
Makes excellent ice-cream, though as with most makers of this price range the ice cream is best if you have time to put it in the freezer for 1/2 hour before serving.0 -
I have the gaggia gelataria. I love it and it is SO reliable and quick. It lives on my worktop
one of the best easiest ice creams is hm yoghurt (thick and creay started from rachels) whipping cream and icing sugar
I add whatever I have in: pistachoes and green and blacks choc spread etc
I have had a basic machine in the past but couldn`t be doing with freezing the bowl as my freezer is tiny0 -
I have just bought my family ice cream makers from QVC for £12.00!! Runs on batteries and no need to put in the freezer before hand.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

I also have the Gaggia ice-cream maker with built in freezer unit. As other owners here have said, it is a very good piece of kit and I'd say it's worth buying if you're gonna get serious about ice-cream making on a regular basis.
I purchased a reconditioned unit direct from Gaggia UK via their website for about £185, that was a couple of years back. I notice they are still selling reconditioned units for £195. I can certainly recommend them, I've had no problems with mine and it came complete with original box/packaging, instructions and was in brand new condition.0 -
thanks for your help everyone, well thats 3 thumbs up for the gaggia thats a good enough recommendation for me! :T now all i need to do is find it for a good price and syphon off some of oh`s money
:rotfl: it comes to something when you have to buy your own chrimbo pressie  but at least i know im getting something useful rather than useless tat! should i act surprised when i unwrap it xmas day?:rotfl:

fancy having a stab at making homemade ice cream? this is the cheapest i have seen a ice cream maker selling for! http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index~modelcode~pan-bh941pemw~dept~smallapps~subdept~kitchenessentials~brand~panasonic.htm?aid=119&awid=60612
i know it shouldn`t be on the old style boards, tell me off board guides if you have to and delete the thread as i have already posted it on the grabbit board(here is the link to grabbit thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=9034459#post9034459 )but i thought this would specifically be of interest to old stylers as most of the ice cream machines are at least double in price, don`t forget 2% quidco as well! :j
