I use my icecream maker all the time, and usually make the 'custard style' icecreams, but the other day for a special dinner i made a HFW recipe which uses more of a syrup base (a chocolate icecream). Oh. my. god. I don't even LIKE chocolate icecream and I had to be dragged screaming from the tub. I HIGHLY recommend this, i just used whichever dark choc was on special:

Bought one of these a couple of weeks ago from Amazon £19.99 - it's brill:j . Have only made banana and strawberry so far but can't wait to try the chocolate recipe mentioned in this post.

Stupid question:o - in this recipe it doesn't mention cooling the mixture before churning, presumably you do have to?

    We have a Panasonic BH941P.

It's a tiny gadget (about the size of a 2 pint pudding basin) that works on a battery, and goes into the freezer once you've switched it on. Makes about 3 quarters of a litre of ice cream at a time, which is ideal for just the two of us. We chose it because space is at a premium for us, and I didn't want something that'd take up valuable worktop space.

A good recipe for strawberry sorbet, tried and tested by us:

    1 lb strawberries
    4 oz icing sugar
    juice of a large lemon

Thoroughly crush the berries (ones that have been previously frozen are ideal, as they tend to be squashy when thawed), add the icing sugar and lemon juice, put in machine, switch on.

For a bigger machine, just do multiples of the quantities; as long as you keep the proportions the same, it should be fine.

Hope this is of use to someone.

Thanks for the strawberry sorbet recipe. No cream in it so healthier lol! I've just made rhubarb ice cream, delicious:j (but not low fat, although it's made with yoghurt it's Greek Yoghurt:eek: ) lovely anyway, tastes like rhubarb and custard:) . I'm just about to sample a low fat vanilla I made a couple of weeks ago.

    Hi all,

I'm sick as a chip of crappy uber calorific ice cream! So I want to make some of my own.

Do the OSers have any recommendations on which model to buy? My own research points toward the Kenwood Im250, but I'm sure lots of OSers have been down this path before. I might as well tap into the 'greater knowledge'.

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi abaxas,

There's an earlier thread that may help so I've added your post to it to keep the recommendations together.

This thread might be useful too:

Hi everyone :A ,i want an ice cream machine any hints or tips on which one to buy. Making ice cream by hand at the moment. Have been thinking about this for some time. Quite an outlay:eek: so don't want to make a mistake.
Was looking at the one in the lakeland cat. Thanks BTx:j
  • What's your budget?

I have the Gaggia Gelateria, but it's not cheap at £300!

However, it has a built in freezer, so you just "press and go" - no pre-freezing containers, no hand-work and no checking back after a couple of hours.

Thanks DFC and Wssla00 really haven't give much thought to price, just wanted tips on what to look for when buying. Will google gaggia, sounds handy just having to push button. The first place i looked was lakeland.
