Thanks Pink, i tried searching, couldn't find anything myself BTx
  • i used to have one of the ones with a bowl you have to freeze and to be honest the chances of having that much free space in the freezer was low.. there is no way i could do it now.
and then if you want to make more after you have to clean and refreeze it before you can do it.. i broke it when i set it all up, set it off and realised id forgotten the paddle.. quickly put it in but the mixture had frozen solid to the sides and the paddle motor burnt out trying to turn..

if you are serious about it and you have the money i'd go for the one that freezes itself

Charliee, just thinking that myself, Gaggia sometimes do recon ones, will make few phone calls on Monday. On the ga site around £190. That sounds a bit better than £300. BT

I used to have one - ooops still do, its in storage in utility room, but at one time was in almost daily use! my son was dairy intolerant and i used to make soya ice cream and sorbets for him and his siblings!
the bowl had to be kept overnight in freezer, but that wasnt a prob as i just used to shove bags of frozen veggies in it! so didnt take up too much space!
actually, I might get it out of retirement, just thinking about the watermelon sorbet, or the blackberry sorbet or
the champagne sorbet i made once! (too expensive to repeat). mmmmmmmmmmm
as for which model - they work on same principle hun, you can get good results with a cheapish model if you take care with ingredients get good recipes and make SURE the bowl is really frozen. viola - half hour later you got yourself delicious desserts!

    What's your budget?

I have the Gaggia Gelateria, but it's not cheap at £300!

However, it has a built in freezer, so you just "press and go" - no pre-freezing containers, no hand-work and no checking back after a couple of hours.

I found an ice-cream maker at the local tip - one like yours with the built-in freezer. It doesn't have an instruction book with it though, so I just wondered how long it normally takes to churn and freeze ice-cream? I've had it for a couple of years and would love to make some soya ice-cream.

Mine has a timer and I guess it runs for about 25 mins. I'd experiment and see how long it takes to churn to a satisfactory consistency

mine stops automatically when the ice cream gets too thick (according to them but right for me) so I would perhaps keep an eye on it the first one you do and time it.

I have an ice cream maker but it has always been a bit of a palava having to freeze the bowl and the last time I used it, it was going for ages and didn't seem to ever produce what I was hoping for.
I'm starting to think of upgrading it, so when I am asked what I want for my birthday I will say cash!!!
I am toying with either the gaggia / cuisinart machines/ something similar if anyone has any recommendations and wondered if those with these machines could comment on their use with these. Many thanks.
    I'm not a failure if I don't make it, I'm a success because I :tried!

    Hi AlwaysHappy,

There was a recent thread with some recommendations that may help:

    ice cream machine

I'll add your thread to that one once it's dropped down the board to keep the replies together.

I have a gaggia and it is beautiful. Very nice machine and customer service is great too!

You get two bows and to use the removable one you need to put in some vodka or similar in between the two bowls to stop it sticking.

It takes about half an hour to make icecream, but it is addictive! Very good in the summer though. The bet ones I have made are vanilla, rhubarb and lemon. All delicious.
