I use my icecream maker all the time, and usually make the 'custard style' icecreams, but the other day for a special dinner i made a HFW recipe which uses more of a syrup base (a chocolate icecream). Oh. my. god. I don't even LIKE chocolate icecream and I had to be dragged screaming from the tub. I HIGHLY recommend this, i just used whichever dark choc was on special:

I have this one and it is the bees knees

    http://www.gaggiaspecialist.co.uk/ice_cream_makers/gelatiera/10245_p.html

I just pop everything in and then transfer the ice cream to my freezer for storage

I often make this recipe but I don`t measure anything. I put it all into a large container and lightly whisk first then pour into the gelatiera, which does the work

1 lge carton rachels yoghurt, 1 carton whipping cream, several tbs icing sugar, vanilla extract. That`s it. I sometimes add things like green and blacks choc spread and cashews, choc chips, ginger preserve, blueberries etc easy peasy

I'd second a vote for the Gaggia. Makes fantastic sorbet too if you're trying to watch the waistline.

Has anyone got the Cuisinart ice cream maker. It seems that it has a higher capacity than some makers. I read somewhere that some icecream makers require vodka in the outer dish before use. Is this true?

The Gaggia has a two bowl system. You can either make the icecream directly in the cavity in the machine, or if you are making batches of icecream there is a second bowl which fits inside the machine's cavity. If you're using this bowl you need to put a small amount of what they call 'alimentary alcohol' into the main bowl first before putting the second bowl in. (Discovered they meant it was alcohol you could drink, rather than something like meths!)

I don't think it has to be vodka necessarily, just something which would be safe to drink if you got some of it in your mix by mistake. I think it's there to stop the removable bowl freezing to the rest of the machine.

  • I bought a Russel Hobbs 'Temptations' ice cream maker £15.99 off Amazon

    Its great.
I keep the bowl in my upright freezer, a bag of sausage rolls fits nicely inside :)
Says freeze for 6 - 8 hours, (but i just keep mine in there ready for the impulse need for ice cream)
You take the bowl out. Add ingredients then put it on to mix.
After 15 minutes at the most, you can eat :)

We have made a few cheats ice creams ;)
    2 tins ready made custard
1 carton of double cream (284ml)
Then added different things Tried 2 x bananas ( just cut it up and put it in)
A sachet of creamed coconut (it was a 50g pataks thing)
    1 bag of chocolate chips

All the 3 types we have made have been very yummy ;)

I've had mine for 5 weeks now and can say that the novelty has not worn off.

    Chocolate :j

Greek yoghurt, honey and ginger :j

Vanilla with proper vanilla pod :j

    Coffee :j

    All gorgeous.

Have even found a little ice cream cone set from the Linda Barker collection. A metal stand with 4 ceramic ice cream cones in it. I think it will be lovely to serve on a summer day as a pudding.
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend
