Is it likely that people will be googling your name though?

Yes, some people will inevitably do that. I googled my landlady for instance because I was worried about things she'd said and how dodgy she might be.

I deal with a lot of people through my work, and to me they are only acquaintances who don't need to know about my personal situation, I'd be really annoyed too if the first thing they found out about me is that I'm a BR, when I'm trying to move on... But hopefully things are different in Scotland...

Were you not told in advance that it may appear? However it's now no longer a legal requirement to have it advertised in the local papers although as far as I'm aware it still goes into the London Gazette. Why on earth anyone would choose to is beyond me though
Effect of bankruptcy on the debtor's reputation

The bankruptcy will be advertised in the London Gazette and possibly another local newspaper. The Official Receiver will make enquires of third parties, for example, the bankrupt's bank, mortgage company, landlord and anyone else who may be able to provide details of the bankrupt's financial affairs, including the Citizens Advice Bureau. The local authority, utility suppliers and any relevant professional bodies will be informed.

Details of the bankruptcy, together with details of any bankruptcy restrictions order (BRO) or bankruptcy restrictions undertaking (BRU) are kept in a public register available on The Insolvency Service website at www.insolvency.gov.uk, from which members of the public can obtain details of the debtor's bankruptcy.

It is optional for the OR whether to publish it or not in the local papers, not the BR

Can you ask the OR not to publish it in the local rag or is it down to the OR's discretion ?

Only if you may come to some harm if someone found out where you lived for example, in the case of domestic abuse, it would put the BR in danger if the ex found out where they now lived.

In such cases you must apply to the court to order the OR to withold it i believe

I dont want to sound daft and I can understand protecting someone vulnerable. But anybody can look it up the address on line or do they hide the address on the IS site.

Thanks sizzler:)

yep they hide it on IS website as well, Although called a Stay of advertisment it is really a stay of telling certain people with the judge deciding exactly who or what gets told or not told
