I have recently completed a self-build, and when we were at the stage where we had to leave home early and work hard we did the following:
Porridge (using wide mouth vacuum flask) but I know some are happy with "instant"
chunky home made soup (ditto) with home made croutons
pasta meals (ditto - get a good few wide mouth flasks!)
fruit salad - can be picked at more easily than munching on fruit - we added things like raisins & prunes
fruit & nut mix (verging on expensive)
flapjack - I made batches at the weekend, with added raisins etc.
because I like it: chopped celery & apple with chopped cheese + some oat crackers
Thanks for this, can I ask what flask you have as I am definately going to look in to buying one. Also do you have a recipe for flapjack as that sounds fab too and I could make them with my daughter.
Thanks again.0 -

if you have any leftover chilli, curry or the like from your evening meals, make them into big pasties, add some cooked rice or lentils to bulk them out and to add carbs for extra energy.Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!DFW Long Hauler Supporter No 1500

I think it would be a good idea to find him a fast and filling breakfast, as well as addressing the lunch issue. I love my sleep as well, but if I don't have breakfast I'm eating everything within sight by 10am. So now I have a banana and protein shake every day and it keeps me full for hours.
1 banana
2 scoops protein powder (any protein powder from a sports shop would do the trick)
250ml milk
Whizz up in a blender, drink from blender jug, rinse jug, wipe mouth, leave for work. It takes less time than having a cup of tea and is way healthier than leaving the house hungry0 -
Honeythief not everyone likes smoothies, I for one choke on them. As for protein powder it is very expensive and therefore not affordable for people on a tight budgetBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Meh, I buy big bags of protein for £45ish...and each bag would make 200 smoothies as above - so 22p each. It's pretty much the cheapest way you'll find of getting protein into your diet.
As for not everyone liking smoothies, you're right - but OP asked for ideas and Honeythief is offering one.
I personally agree with the notion of having breakfast at home. I have a couple of weetabix and a barocca before I set out..Takes all of 2 minutes to make and another 2 to eat...but I get much less hungry mid-morning as a result.0 -

Too bad about your choking problem. It's a shame you can't enjoy this cheap filling breakfast option.0 -
Sausage pie - one pack flakey pastry, i pack sausage meat. Roll out pastry into square about 15 inches long (or to fit your tray), spread meat on half, fold over other half, crimp the three sides, make a couple of fork stabs and shove in oven till golden brown. My son loves a slice cold as a fill-up. Once cooled i just put it in the fridge and he helps himslef, though you could cut into generous squares and put in freezer. By lunch time it will have defrosted and kept his sarnies cool as well.MrsSD declutter medals 2023 🏅🏅🏅⭐⭐ 2025
