I like pitta bread filled with rice, chopped tomatoes and chopped ham, sometimes bits of cheese too. Better still is the flavoured rice in it ;)

Also, those part-bake bagettes are really nice as a change (or half a one depending on the children's appetite).

Mum used to get different ham for us when we were at school, sometimes salami or pastrami for a change.

We're still enjoying home made soups with crusty bread - even though it's July we haven't had much sun in Southend!! You can make them with whatever veggies you have in.
My little Mutants are young, so they also like boiled egg and soldiers for a change and home made macaroni cheese...HTH!

  • Hey guys

I work in a big fancy city with the lure of great places to eat everywhere! I need some tasty ideas for work lunches - I'm an extremely fussy eater, I dont like sarnies (sandwiches in case you were wondering) and I prefer hot meals. Surprisingly I dont like soup (at least I dont think I have bought one to try different from tomato its the lumps that make me feel sick - pathetic I know) Any ideas?

    Hi there :D

I'm exactly the same as you, give me a pasta salad anyday! I've got no ideas to give you though I'm afraid, just jumping on the bandwagon and looking forward to some tasty OS ideas!

    Hi,

I am the same as you re.sarnies. This weekend I have bought a Stanley thermos jug thing from Wilkos. It has a wide mouth and you can put it in the microwave to heat the contents and they stay hot. Even has a spoon in the lid and a carry handle. Haven't used it yet but it was only about 3.99. Ideal for taking in leftovers or single portions.

I've made mini quiches and mini cornish pasties recently for lunch, had them both cold though (we have no facility for heating anything up at work). I tend mostly to have leftovers in one form or another, I stick mince filling in wraps, have cold pasta... nothing all that inspirational!

What dont you like about sandwiches, is it the fact that the bread can go a bit soggy? OH takes in a loaf, cheese tuna and has a selection of marg, picallili, branston, mayo etc in the fridge at work, and assembles there.

If you dont like soup with lumps in , try making your own with a stick blender. I do a leek & potato one, easy peasy, also a mexican chilli bean one, and you can blend them to death so there are no lumps in.

What about a chicken salad or similar?

What do you normally buy when you are out for lunch?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • do you have a kitchen/microwave/grill at work?

I often do cheese, ham & tomato toasties on our george forman grill at work, or grill bacon/sausages/burgers etc.

Or baked potatoes with whatever filling you like if you have a microwave.

I'm a sandwich lover too, but I do try to go without the bread every so often, a sort of detox but on combination diet.

What kinds of things are you buying when you go out? If you're buying quiches or pork pies or samosas or onion barjis, could you make/take your own? Or can you make whatever it is you're buying if not any of the above?

I like a pasta salad or a risotto, sometimes I'll take a fish or egg salad, and I've also been known to take just a bag full of fruit.

If you have a savoury tooth, you could try raw vegetables and take some dips. And if you have a thermos flask, baked beans or curried beans might make an alternative to soup, although you still have those lumps ...

I'll usually take a sandwich, a yoghurt, something "nice" like a bar of chocolate or cake, and a couple of pieces of fruit.
