I'm trying to get a hotel in Manchester city centre for 12th Nov for one night 4* (there isn't any higher on priceline) but not having much luck. Have bid £60 but not getting anywhere (is this far too low?).

Looking at the recent wins for the two likely candidates

4* Marriott Victoria and Albert Can be as low as £45.00
    4* Renaissance Varies

    The £60 should be OK.
    Other likely hotels.

Hotwire has a few unidentified hotels from $46 up to $192.00

What are the standard rates for these two hotels for your stay?

You could try to ID the hotwire hotels as per my guide.

    Hi Blindman,

    Thanks for the reply.

The standard rates for those 2 hotels are around £139. I'll have a look at Hotwire.

A bid of £50-£60 should get you the V&A or better.
The V&A is my favourite Manchester hotel (apart from the Lowry LOL) -I've got it a couple of times with priceline

    He\she has already bid £60...

With the prevailing rate being £140 then maybe the priceline rate is also high-probably £70-£80.

Past wins for hotels can only act as a guide when bidding on PL.

I'm just wondering why it is so much higher as it's mid-week (Weds) which I thought would be cheaper. We're there that night to see Lee Evans at the M.E.N. so maybe the prices have been bumped up due to this, who knows? I'm just going to try with a bid of £65 and see where that gets me. :)

Just bid at £65 and got this message:
If you are willing to raise your price by £13, you can try the same request again right now.

Did you manage to ID the hotwire Hotels?

Business type hotels will have higher rates during the week as they are full of 'suits'

Don't go too high as you need to add Tax to that bid.

What price are other alternatives (travelodge ) ?

I was really after a nice 4* hotel as it's a surprise for my hubby on our 1st wedding anniversary (he knows we're going to see Lee Evans but not that we'd be staying over) so that's why I haven't tried travelodge.

Hotwire brings up a 3* hotel in Salford at $45 (being the cheapest) and the average for the others is about $130. There doesn't seem to be any higher than 3* though (3.5* at Manchester airport but that's a bit too far away from the M.E.N. Arena).

Thanks again for all of the help and fast responses.

It may be worth holding off for a little while to see if any inventory opens up at a later date.

You would need to either make a cancellable back up (at somewhere suitable) or be prepared not to stay over should all else fail.

Don't overbid at this early date as you need to factor in any charges the hotel may have like parking etc.

    BTW
The ratings on Hotwire are usually inflated by at least .5* so the Salford hotel may be a 2 or2.5*

Just saw this on your earlier post
Just bid at £65 and got this message:
If you are willing to raise your price by £13, you can try the same request again right now.
That would seem to suggest the "winning" bid is around the £72-75 mark.
Add taxes to that and any incidentals (parking..) and you may be looking at £85-90

At £130 for the normal rates only you can say if it's worth it

    No way to tell really.

You could do a dummy booking on Hotwire to see what comes up. Use the guide to determine the likely hotels.
This may help in seeing which hotels are giving inventory away.
Though just because the hotel comes up on hotwire is no guarantee it will be on
    Priceline.

I see you have posted on betterbidding, thereuare should be able to help.

    Good luck

Hotwire is coming back as over twice the price of priceline, ie: over $250.

With Priceline, is it normally cheaper to book via the US site or is there no difference. I ask as all the prices on betterbidding are (obviously) in $.
