PAYG Mobile internet dongle?

How do you know you are getting the old non-expiring one? Is the difference that the old one is 1GB and the new one 3GB?
I've pulled this off the Voodofone forum as it clarifies this:
Hi all,
I'd like to clear up the confusion, as I can see there's a lot of potential for mistakes to be made here.
There are two seperate propositions if you will, which have different modems, different price-plans, and different terms.
Anyone who purchased a Top Up and Go Modem prior to the 26th of December, will have the original £15 for 1GB plan, non-expiring credit. Some third-party retailers will still be stocking these part way into January.
The new PAYS Modems have an "R" on their sticker, so you can tell the difference, and give you £15 for 3GB, but credit expires after 30 days. These are now the only Top Up and Go Modems available direct from Vodafone as of the 26th of December 2009.

Unfortunately the phrase "purchased a Top Up and Go Modem prior to the 26th of December" is not as clear as I would like: What if one purchases the older 1GB/£15 version after that date / activates / first uses that older dongle after that date? It does not say on the outside of the box at retail outlets either.0

I have just brought a vodafone PAYG modem from Tescos, it was the last one in the store and they were further reduced down to £24.99, I just checked the box for an R and looked at the shelf edge ticket which said it included £15/1Gb. It does seem a great deal, get them while you can. PS. don't go to Borehamwood Tesco, got the last one!0

Bracknell Tesco has about 10 (Homeplus store at Peel Centre)0

Tesco Direct also shows them as available - http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-2307.aspxBracknell Tesco has about 10 (Homeplus store at Peel Centre)
Vodaphone Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband dongle gives you broadband access at speeds of up to 3.6mbps, without a fixed contract or direct debit, giving you freedom and flexibility to use the internet where ever you are. Includes £15 of top up already loaded, giving you 1GB credit straight away with 270 days to use it in before you need to top up again.0 -
Well spotted, that beats Ebay by £10 then... just make sure that Tesco has not mis-described the item - they appear to have old Dec 09 stock online and not the current Voda offering... a mis-catalogue?
That 270 days is a new one - previously, only seen 180 days (if not used) expiry quoted.0 -
Just back from my weekend away and couldn't get the Vodafone 1GB in any of the places I tried, including Tesco.
However I had seen it on Tesco Direct at £24.99 before I left so I ordered it in store and it should be delivered to a store about 17 miles away (my nearest) on Wednesday.
The catalgue only has the 3GB one, but I told the girl I'd seen it online and she was able to order it for me.
I have only used the 3 PAYG before and managed to surf for about 40 hours before the 30 day expiry. This one should work out even better as I only want it for the odd weekend away and for using in airports while we are between flights.0 -

I gave this a try & it worked a treat but it flattened the phone battery within 40 mins
The Viewty is well known for battery issues so I've decided not to go down this route & have ordered the Vodafone dongle from Tesco direct.
Thanks for the link though

A lot cheaper than buying a dongle and buying data. I could connect using my phone, but just take the sim out and put it in my netbook.
Looks like I might be working away again for a few months, and I came to this thread wondering about mobile net. I have a 3 contract phone, are you suggesting I could maybe just grab a bluetooth dongle for the laptop and use my phone as a modem for £5/month? I do hope you are

You could use a bluetooth dongle - I've done that and it works fine.
But the cable that came with your phone attached to usb is better. Mine is a Nokia so I have PC Suite installed; then I just click 'connect to internet' when I want to keep my phone in use - my netbook will accept the sim card in a slot in its back.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.
