    great new thread :)

A question about door knocking rather than book dropping - what do you say and where do you start? It scares me a bit tbh but if it is worth it then I'll do it!

Hi GK, first of all take a deep breath and ask yourself what's the worst that can happen? They can say No, right? It's not going to hurt and by asking rather than 'stuffing' you get to keep the book in your hand to give to someone, who you know actually wants it. In the beginning with only 20 books then those books are 'pretty precious' and 'deserve the best home you can find for them' :rotfl:

As for what how I do it, make sure you're looking reasonably presentable of course with a bit of make-up on but not too much, have the book in your hand (front cover forward), knock, big smile, apologise for disturbing them and then if they look reasonably approachable try and slip some compliment in about their house, garden, dress, hairdo - anything really just to put a smile on their face too. Get them in conversation so they start to 'get to know/like' you and then at an appropriate moment, apologise again for disturbing them (if you feel the need) and mention that you've just started doing Avon - all new to you and you wonder if they'd like to look at a book too. Comments like "It's come on leaps and bounds since I last looked at a book myself", "there are always bargains to be had and things for 99p", "even cheaper than the High Street and you get it delivered - by me (!) - free to your door", "no obligation whatsoever", "you can look for nothing" and "I'll definitely be back on .........day to collect the book so you won't be left with any 'rubbish' to dispose of that you don't want". Even slip in a comment about how you've seen Avon books left on doorsteps for weeks/months and make some sort of disparaging comment about how awful that is and re-assure them that you don't operate that way.

Oops, what a gobby bird I am - guess that's half of the trick. Get them in conversation first. Of course, some will come to the door with a scowl on their face because you've disturbed their meal or something else, in which case be reeeaalllly apologetic, forget the compliment and just say quickly something like "Oh, really sorry for disturbing you - just wondered if there's anyone in the house, who may be interested in Avon?" You'll definitely get some that just mumble No and shut the door in your face but keep that smile on your face and thank them for their time. If you sense any hesitation at all then just keep chipping away with the benefits as above. Sometimes I've had men accepting books even when their wives are not in. Maybe they see it as a 'bit of a treat for the little lady' or they don't dare risk refusing one in case she finds out?

    Hope that helps.

Collected from new territory today, 2 new roads and only got a total of 2 orders totalling £14.25 :( Lots of not interested and books not left out. Also had 2 VERY rude people.....even though i had my little girl with me! One woman even "shooed" me away without answeing the door after she peered out the window and asked what i wanted and i showed her the avon book ... felt like giving her the V sign... But my mummy brought me up better ;) :rotfl:

I think i need to go get my hair done and dress smarter when i knock from now on.. i have a feeling people see me and think "teenage mum" and look down their noses and thatrs why they are really rude :( I'm NOT by the way, im 24 and was engaged when i had my little girl 2 years ago... but wherever i go and even people ive spoken to on my round have told me they assumed i was about 18/19! and so with a 2 year old with me......! Its nothing against teenage mums, but peoples attitudes DO seem to change when i tell them im 24, have my own house and car and in middle of uni etc. Maybe its just my confidence is a bit low at min.. but for some reason felt like such a scruff today in my usual clothes of combat jeans and trainers and like i was being looked down on :(

Don't take it personally, johanne; remind yourself it's the book they don't like/want, not you. Have also been shooed away on occasions - probably more with Betterware than Avon although saying that I've had people 'chasing' me down the street to give me the book back that I've just stuffed through their door. (Betterware's policy is to stuff rather than ask - just goes to show, I can do both! ;) )

Yes, think it's important to look 'reasonably presentable' when doing Avon (got to admit I don't bother as much when doing Betterware but guess I should) - doesn't mean you need loads of expensive new clothes, just nice clean hair, bit of make-up and surprising what a difference having a pretty scarf or even hat/beret, if you're into headwear, can make. I tend to think colour i.e. what suits you, is more important than the actual garment.

As for looking younger than your age - revel in it - one day you'll be glad! As for the 'teenage mum' image, which seems to be dragging you down, my feeling is that that's in your head. Even if you were 18, the 2 year old could be your sister and you could be just a very industrious teenager, helping her mum out, which is laudable. Having said that, you're not (and it's nobody's business but yours anyway) - walk talk and with pride in yourself and your family. People you meet take their leads from you in all sorts of ways so if you're negative 10-1 they will be too. Be positive!

:T for my MIL - even though she absolutely will not recanvass - has actually been pro-active, and when she had her hair cut the other day, she mentioned she was now an avon lady - so now all the ladies in the hairdressers want her to take a brochure in as none of them have a regular rep

    Hi ladies

I have recently been made redundant :o am in need of seeking some alternative income and have considered looking into Avon. I appreciate its not an instant win thing however I don't know where to start :o

I've had some 'sales' experience from the job I was made redundant from so approaching people and knocking on doors wouldn't bother me but I suppose my concerns are the areas they allocate you. Are they normally within walking distance of your home or a few miles away??

I live in the centre of the country if that helps anyone?

    thanks in advance

What territory you are given completely depends upon what is free - but you will be given the closest available territory, so usually yes it is within walking distance. Unfortunately us Sales leaders are unable to check what territory is free until you have completed a contract (due to data protection) - however with avon, if you don't submit an order then you won't owe a thing, so you can sign up, give it a go and if it doesn't suit you then you can leave with no problem.

If you apply through the official website - then you will be signed up by the area manager. I did this - and regret it now, for the most part area managers are useless - they have lots of targets to meet, so as long as you place a first order then thats about the last you will hear from them in many cases. If you join with a good sales leader, then it can make all the difference, as you will have lots of support and usually any questions or queries are dealt with much quicker.

Whereabouts are you roughly - it could be that there is a sales leader on here who would be able to help you if you do decide to join x
